    Thank you but where?

He could try looking in the Shropshire Borderlands, centering his search on, say, Church Stretton. Not quite into Wales and with reasonable communications from Shrewsbury.

Not extreme hills, but some very pleasant scenery and the chance of something tucked away, just too distant from obvious tourist/ retirement draws, like Ludlow.
  • Tregaron is exactly where I was thinking of Dave. It comes over as impossible to live there unless being a Welsh speaker. That's the place that never seems to put any articles about it in English and I think it was them that has a Facebook page that cant be read either.

I got the message - ie non-Welsh speakers unwelcome.

Does this friend understand the reality of living somewhere PROPERLY isolated? Or do they just think it might be nice not to have any neighbours (in an urban sense)?

Thank you I will pass it on but my guess is it's not isolated enough.

    Is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockall isolated enough?

Not so sure about the great views.

"Oh look, there's a big wave."
    "Ooh, there's another big wave."
    "Crikey, and another big wave."

You could buy a house in the Lake District for that money if you don't mind being really isolated. But many people think they're isolated if they just can't see their neighbours!
Also, have a look at Eden, around the Kirkby Stephen area. A wonderful place to live and without the high prices of the Lakes.

Yes, we haven't really understood the motivation here, which can make a difference to the suitability of locations.

For example, secluded locations where the noise from a motorway was intrusive would be no good if the person just didn't want to hear so many sounds of modern life.

The same could be true of places under major aircraft flight paths, particularly where the planes are climbing to cross the Atlantic, producing long periods of soft, but noticeable background roar.

Other difficulties may also kick-in with increased isolation, like the need to maintain a road or track, which still might not be good enough for the oil delivery lorry. For practical reasons, it might therefore be wiser to accept a passing car or two every hour.

And lastly, although having that next door neighbour nearly half a mile distant might be great, the very quietness could actually make their activities more intrusive. For example, a farm over a mile away from me has a dog that barks all night, while another mile-distant neighbour cuts up logs with a chain saw, because he sells them. If they were closer.....
