OH and I have done most of the childrens christmas shopping, just the extended family to sort out now.We were quite lucky OH workplace has started a flexi working scheme and for those that opted in there was a one off incentive payment of £400 so we used that for christmas.

I have read this entire thread with a mixture of recognition and disbelief. Recognition because some of my husband`s behaviour (which I thought unique to him) seems to be repeated - admittedly in a much more extreme way- on posting after posting. Disbelief in the outrageous behaviour that seems to be tolerated by the female posters, often with the implicit excuse that their partners are male - as if this was some sort of license to return to an utterly selfish and childlike stage - emotionally about 3-4 yrs seemingly.
My husband is not good with money, so after 30 years of marriage then sensible path seemed to be to leave it to the Martin Lewis accolylte - me.
Arguments ensued about his contribution to the household budget - £700.00 a month. For that he gets to live here, have council tax, gas, electric, water, TV license, insurance, mortgage and food paid for - all of which come out of my salary. I also save for us. When he decided this left him with hardly any money of his own, I looked at the mobile phone bill, internet and his car insurance and cut his bills by about 30%. When he still thought £700.00 was too much, I told him to find an alternative (and meant it). He decided it was indeed fair.
The liberation for me was in realising that, lovely man though he is with many, many redeeming qualities, when I offered him the ultimatum I meant it. That realisation is indeed female liberation and I heartily commend it to others on this site!
Debt September 2020 BIG FAT ZERO!
Now mortgage free, sort of retired, reducing and reusing and putting money away for grandchildren...
  • Ive had a bit of a shock this morning. When OH went into work they were called into a meeting, there is to be 70 redundancies, he is OK at the present but Its a shock and I just feel that if they have made 70 redundant there could be more. The redundancies are in a different department to his and are mainly higher grades but it just makes you feel a little insecure.
I have been sat here this morning thinking about how the world has changed in the last year. The credit crunch, the house price crash, the withdrawal of lots of mortgage products. The news is full of doom and gloom, redundancies and even my employer is doing reviews on all departments to see if they can save money (they call it reviewing services).
Is there no good news in the world?
Its made me feel really fed up.

Totally agree, I worry about that too but I have another user ID which I use when I think I might be identified by personal things.
  • Not wanting to start the battle of the sexes here but this frivolous spending stuff isn't gender specific. Although I have been guilty of it, I tended to do it on smaller things. My ex cohabitee was frivolous with ermmmm rather larger items. I was too soft and took the brunt of the debt on. Mug, eh?
I walked quite a few years ago. I didn't walk to protect my finances. I walked to protect my sanity.
