It was destroyed while we were in the EU, by Thatcher.

No global market forces prevailed. We'd be royally screwed now if we had a protectionist approach

can I just get this absolutely clear

if anything that you perceive is good happened in the last 50 years, then that is entirely (or mainly) due to the UK being in the EU and inspite of the racist/lazy/ stupid people of the UK
if anything you perceive as bad happened in the last 50 years then that definitely had nothing to do with the EU and entirely due to the racist/lazy/stupid people of the UK

    certainly beats having to think.
mine you, I always thought the british leyland etc went out of business because the racist brits starting buying Japanese / foreign cars and refused to buy leyland rubbish.

If Leave supporters can blame the EU for being undemocratic because they do not know their MEP's name anything is possible.

The decline in manufacturing in the UK is not due to the EU and has everything to do with our domestic policy of encouraging financial services plus a load of low paid service jobs that Brits do not want to do. Germany has no problems manufacturing goods in the EU and selling them inside and outside of the EU.

I am fed up with being told that everything that is wrong in Britain is due to the EU.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

Yes but was that the fault of the EU?

What happens if the voting patterns show a strong bias in the Leave vote to places like the North of England?

Even if Remain win then some will suggest this is evidence that Corbyn has failed to get "the message" across.

The alternative, that we have a divided country, would be less palatable to contemplate, even if it might be true.

Noboby seriously believes that the democratic deficit is because they don't know the name of their MEP and it childish to maintain that stanz.
The democratic deficit is reflected by the tortous path between people wanting a change in policy and the years before it can realistically happen.

In what way did the UK government discourage manufacturing?
Give us some examples : maybe some photos of people queuing up to buy UK cars and govenment agents were preventing them from entering the car showrooms.
Why did the government encourage low paid service jobs rather the high paid manufacturing; personally I dislike both Blair and Brown but I wouldn't accuse them of that.

The reality is that the traditional UK manufacturing, cars, steel etc did not keep up with other countries in terms ofprice, quality, design etc.
It was the PEOPLE of the Uk that choose to buy foreign cars rather and BL and not government action that destroyed UK car making.
I don't deny that the government should have acted ealier to crush the trotyskites in the trade unions but thats another story.

:) gfx ... Luxembourg is a lovely place, whether you're a magnet or not! You have made a good choice. I do apologise if it seemed a personal dig. It's just even every housing discussion here is centred solely on London. It's a London-centric forum basically.

    My worry is simple.

I suspect this referendum will show regional divisions, and it is depressing to consider that the UK government has rather forgotten about the regions.

I am still tempted to change my mind and vote Remain, but I worry that this referendum has done nothing but shown a complete lack of unity in UK to the rest of the world.

The vote on Thursday is not the end of it.

Kabayiri, you have my full support as I am convinced that successive British Governments have done little for the regions outside of London. The pull WITHIN the UK towards the South East should have been tackled AGGRESSIVELY starting many years ago.
However we are where we are, not where we would like to be.

You should CHANGE your mind as the regions receive huge funding from the EU. Do you really think that the Politicians in LONDON are going to make sure that funding continues AFTER BREXIT. You know the answer to that, don't you.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

could you give us the figures for the 'huge' funding from our EU taxes to the UK regions?

we will have to disagree about where tax and spending decisions should be made : I favour the UK parliament, you favour the EU byzantine processes.

    certainly worth listening to

    he says
    -EU immigration is rising
-UK exports to the EU are falling
-overall their model says the UK GDP is higher by 2% due to free trade within the EU
