It will never ever ever happen but it would be fascinating to watch the effects of the relocation of 800000 council Tennant's to stoke on trent.

It need not be negative. If the government sold 800,000 flats in London it could raise in the region of £250 billion. They could pave the streets of stoke in gold for that.

    Why relocate council tenants?

We need to incentivise firms that pay above average salaries to locate to the regions which should free up London houses and lower house prices.

Where would you find all those people with above average productivity to take the jobs?

Rent seeking by companies rarely seems to produce the best economic outcomes.

people would move to jobs if the companies/jobs moved.

Business rates tax and rents is already a huge incentive for business to be outside London or even for business to move just a few miles from Z1 to business parks in Z4/5/6.

Maybe instead of fannying about with a 'northern powerhouse' the government needs to promote in every way possible the further expansion and growth of Londons domestic and export service sectors.

I find very little substance in that article.

She mentions that Britain is suffering an identity crisis. Wow, newsflash eh. That's been going on for at least a generation.

You can pick dozens of towns up and down the UK where people who live there don't know what the future holds. The EU can't offer these people any solutions right now. It's unlikely Boris and the UKIP crew can either.

Quite. Look how many Russians are in the UK. That's definitely not in the EU and per Wikipedia there may be up to 150,000 people born in Russia in London alone. For sure, some will be ethnic Russians from the former Soviet Baltics, but far from all. I hear Russian spoken quite regularly. They certainly aren't all oligarchs either.

I'm not Russian, but I wish I was an oligarch. It would solve many problems.

On a serious note, what happens to those of us that have spent the last few years starting and growing a business that depends on Britain being in the EU? Unless there is more/less free movement of vehicles/equipment/human assets, I'm personally more/less doomed, taking jobs with me.

An interesting piece although like so much in the papers these days it reads like an undergraduate essay with a second year student premise groping at the bra strap of the fresher of facts.

The article does raise one good point: where the heck is the Labour Party? They've gone AWOL. To be fair it might be better for the Remainders that Corbyn stays out of it but you'd hope that he'd at least have a shot at not being utterly hopeless.

The salaries they would pay in Stoke and Newcastle would be very attractive incentives to move to those areas, with an immediate rise in standard of living.

I know it is not easy but sitting and watching these problems develop in London and the SE is hardly a solution.

Anyone care to guess what incredibly popular policy the Government will bring in if we vote to stay in?

I'm sure we will hear about one soon....

I suspect that the largely pro Brexit press are just not reporting what is being said apart from by the Government and its rebellious ministers. Even UKIP has been rather quiet based on the press coverage.

Corbyn is speaking about the EU next week.
