He's having a bit of a troll but he's right - the importance of English in the EU will diminish.

Not sure why his nationality or the residence of a fellow poster matters though.

It is not so long ago that Germany tried to make the official language German rather than English. However much they try they will not be able to change the fact that only Chinese and Spanish are spoken by more people in the world than English, and that English is the official language of Air Traffic control. English will remain the most aspired to language because it is spoken by so many, and it tends to be a common language among different nationalities.

French and German are not even in the top 10 spoken languages.

Simply put, the eu may want to squash us, but it will not happen.

Out of interest do you think people speak interest because of the influence of England or the USA?

If you answer England you're very, very wrong and probably a bit up yourself.

    A bit of a troll?

The status of English as the lingua-franca of business will remain and therefore remain as important as it ever was in the EU.

Only Spanish comes close, largely in under developed countries with poor economies. English use in business will continue to dominate and propagate in most areas of life due to this.

You were right and should have left it at Junker was just having a troll. What a lovely person.

If you go back to the beginning it is because of England, the UK. The US spoke English long before they gained independence. Not arguing that the US has a big influence, just saying that is how it all started.

That English started in England, or more accurately Germany and Denmark, is a very interesting fact but one which is ultimately meaningless.

People speak English because the USA is the dominant world power, the language starting with the Angles and Saxons is great but ultimately immaterial.

So you are saying that where a language started does not matter. Well I beg to differ, it matters very much where a language started. The fact it is still called English rather than American, and that includes in the US, has to mean a lot too.

Out of curiosity where are you from, I notice it is not included in your profile, just that it is bound to influence your opinion as it does mine.

Why is Theresa May briefing everyone on a Nuclear Brexit? There's no way that could be a good thing. A PR disaster.

If it matters where English started then you'd recognise that it didn't start in England. It has its roots in Rome, Saxony, Anglia and Jutland.

If I wanted you to know where I came from I'd put it in my profile. I don't so I didn't.

    ...

    His timing is pants though.

Maybe he just lacks awareness of how his public comments are received?
