The Dutch are reasonable moderate people who do not fall for the right wing populist lies it seems!
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/mar/15/dutch-elections-greenleft-jesse-klaverSometimes compared to Canada’s youthful prime minister, Justin Trudeau, Klaver – who has a Moroccan father and a mother of Indonesian descent – said on polling day that the left’s answer to the far right’s rise in Europe was to stand up for its ideals.
“What I would say to all my leftwing friends in Europe: don’t try to fake the populace,” he said.
“Stand for your principles. Be straight. Be pro-refugee. Be pro-European. We’re gaining momentum in the polls. And I think that’s the message we have to send to Europe. You can stop populism.”0 -

In comparison we have Paul Nuttall...!Do country's get the politicians they deserve!
The moment we leave the EU, Nuttall becomes an unelected non-entity as opposed to an elected non-entity. Lest we forget that the oh so liberal Dutch have just installed the far right as the second largest party in their parliament.
The far right in comparison to mainland Europe is nowhere in the UK.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -

Mmmm, if you'd seen Wilder's manifesto I'm not surprised he's turned people away and I'm rather shocked he obtained as many votes as he did. Some of the manifesto is reminiscent of the Nazi's views of the Jews, only this time it's the PVV's views of the Muslims. I would have thought questions should be asked over why someone with such a manifesto can come joint 2nd.0 -

Point taken but the Dutch system is very different and at least the populist surge to power hasn't happened......now hopefully Macron can see off the racist Le Pen in five weeks time!0 -
This thing about the fake news MSM is a real thing. Just listening to Farages hour long interview with Le Pen on LBC, what a surprise. She's erudite, compassionate, passionate, thoughtful, pro freedom of religion and thought but anti fundamentalism, says to be French and Muslim is completely compitable, has good thoughts on the economy and the nation state, much to say about the Euro and how she will demand complete EU reform taking g it back to a simple trading club only, and with temporary protectionist measures only where a large French firm is on life support.
You would never get this level of illumination in a BBC interview of her.
I highly recommend listening, it's in its final quarter.
One snake oil merchant interviewing an other.
I'm not surprised you found it illuminating. :rotfl:Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0 -

It hasn't happened yet!
There seem to be a fair number of disgruntled people around Europe.
The latest to voice include Romanian lorry drivers working for Ikea for what they consider a pittance.
If you don't think 25%/30% unemployment / youth unemployment is not a source of concern in parts of Europe, think again. Some of these might just be looking for a convenient group to blame, but their discontent is real.0 -
Monday: Brexit 100% confirmed.
Thursday: Toyota invest £240m in UK plants.Toyota says it will invest £240m to upgrade the Burnaston plant near Derby to enable production of vehicles using its new global manufacturing system.
The carmaker says the investment will improve the plant's competitiveness and promote UK supply chain efficiencies.
Toyota has been making cars in the UK since 1992. The Burnaston plant makes the Auris and the Avensis models.
Last year, the plant manufactured around 180,000 vehicles. Most are exported to the EU and elsewhere in the world. If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.0 -

I think we are becoming very myopic in this country. We tend to see things through the lens of Brexit because that's what is important to us now. There is a lot of confirmation bias in all the hunting around for stories about how the EU is 'falling apart .....IKEA lorry drivers....etc. Such stories make brexiteers more comfortable that they are doing the 'right thing'. Unemployment is high in the south but I've spent some time in Spain recently....a lot of people are working on a casual basis and their statistics don't reflect that. We need to be sure we a re not overblowing the EU crises because of our own insecurities! IMO the populist surge is a temporary phenomenon.....hopefully.0 -

I'd be surprised if Toyota decided to invest quarter of a billion in 3 days!0
