Are the pro-EU protagonists here gnashing teeth and pulling out hair too I wonder?
Can't speak for my fellow remoaner quislings, but I'm quite relaxed about it.
Do you really think there are still people around who are kind of hoping that Art.50 will not be triggered?
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

I'll say it here since I said it in the Scotland thread too.

With no authority to do so, it's just setting the stage for yet another whinge when she doesn't get what she wants, 'nasty Westminster, nasty Tories!'.

It would be a bold move by the government to reject it though, would just increase support for the Independence cause.

Polls generally indicate a very narrow lead for Scotland remaining in the UK, but this far out from the likely polling date it really is a toss up

What, despite the government repeatedly saying they will not approve another indyref you mean?
The likelihood is something along the lines of "yes okay, after the UK has formally left the EU".

Also when Sturgeon loses this chance (which is more than possible, even if it is the best chance for many years) that will put paid to cries for independence for at least a generation, if not more.

Really? I hope you don't mean this rubbish:

I might be missing something but does Sturgeon want to insist that Londoners pay for another referendum? Tell her she's dreaming.

    .

Filo has a point though, regardless of rights and wrongs, Mrs May being seen to deny the Scots their will, would only strengthen Scottish resolve for a referendum.

Thing is though, as the Scots see the UK prospering and the new global vision unfolding and indeed UK-EU trade remaining un-hampered, there's a high likelihood the Scots will vote to remain in the UK.

Scotland would be trading a UK seat at the global bodies for a 1/28th of a seat at the EU. Global rule setting bodies hand rules down to the EU.

Scotland would be walking away from the 5 Eyes intelligence alliance. Cant see them wanting to.

By 2019 a new trading alliance due with The Commonwealth will be becoming embedded in the national psyche. The Commonwealth has similar GDP to the EU but faster growth and massive potential and contains 1/3rd of worlds citizens (and we wont be losing EU trade)

The pressure has really been cranked up a notch today. So far we've seen various bits of positioning and bluster from all sides. But today's announcement trumps all that.

It's great to see a strong, female political leader who isn't afraid of making bold moves to get what she wants.

So I expect it will suddenly hit home to the EU leaders that unless they deliver a serious deal to the UK, there is a very real risk that they'll be subsidising Scotland and their barmy govt for many a year.

    Well done Mrs May!

    Would it?

I don't see how rejecting it would increase support, clearly people are either for or against it right now. I don't see how any further campaigning will change the figures or how any rejection will change the figures, needless to say the figures for support will be of no consequence if there's no referendum.

I don't believe that people who err on the side of the union will be flipped because they won't be asked the question. It'll make the loons more entrenched but for some they are so far down the rabbit hole that there's no hope anyway. For them economic disaster appears to be a utopian vision, I think the remainder of the Scottish people will be over the moon to see this group being told no. After all Salmond constantly reiterated that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity :)

Everything about the indy campaign is false, deceitful and divisive. If they are told no I'll laugh heartily.
