We need veto on Trump trade deal, senior Labour figure demands

If you want to influence trade deals you are going to have to win power by winning an election - numpty.

Labour seem to have got very confused on what to do after a vote.

When Brother Corbyn was elected (& even more so when he was re-elected) his devout followers could barely manage a sentence on any topic without adoring reference to his "mandate". They repeatedly lectured us on how it must be respected.

However they appear to believe the reverse when it come's to Trump's mandate. That must be ignored or protested against.

Then we have the EU result. On that they don't even seem to know what their position is. Some of them choose respect the mandate because they think otherwise Corbyn will give them the boot. Others choose not to respect the result because they think otherwise their local constituency will give them the boot. And finally we have some poor souls so distressed by it all that they have to go home with a sick note.

I have an open mind on that last point smf.

If the sovereignty of Parliament is so important that it is one of the reasons we are leaving the EU, then it also stands to reason that they should have a vote on key decisions such as triggering Art 50. However I also see that the government needs to get on with the business of governing.

What I don't want to see is government riding roughshod over Parliament, it is important to be critiqued and questioned, which is a bit of a problem at the moment given that we don't have a properly functioning opposition.

Fresh Brexit legal challenge is blocked by high court

Campaigners had argued parliament must legislate separately to trigger article 127, taking UK out of European Economic Area

Apparently Spanish citizens can't have dual nationality.
Dual nationality. ... Foreign nationals who acquire Spanish nationality must renounce their previous nationality, unless they are natural-born citizens of an Iberoamerican country, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea or Portugal.

Does that mean Brits in Spain have to give up being British? What about Spanish people in Britain - will they need to give up their Spainish nationality to stay here?

The select committees do a pretty good job I think. I watched an excellent discussion yesterday about how to deal with EU immigrants in UK and vice versa - that's how I realised that the Spanish don't allow dual nationality.

Yes SMF I watch a number of Select Committees (when cooking dinner for example) and it does annoy when Remoaners maintain Parliament is not getting a say, that May is being handed a black cheque.

Parliament daily interrogates the Government on Brexit in a variety of ways.

I refuse to accept that I'm not intelligent or sensible for looking at a situation as I see it and making decisions based on that.

I still think leaving is not the right option and I still think it will backfire, however I do respect (if not understand) the views of others that May can get the deal she wants. I still think (as many in the EU do) that she's trying to have her cake and eat it.

I don't think the increased consumer spending will continue, as a) consumer debt is growing and b) there are many people coming into the UK from Europe at the moment for shopping trips, including a potential client yesterday who I met up with and took into London. I can think of 20-30 people I know personally who have done this, or about 2% of my non-UK EU contact book.

My views are very much dynamic, however I run a business that relies on the single market, and know a number more than do, and a lot of us are very concerned about the way the government is going.

    I've been in your position.

I ran a regulated financial services business and when the FSA came along, the whole industry was turned upside down, many lost their business', others saw a big disruption and income loss.

The Govt of the day decided this fate, and for good or ill, I had to accept it and adapt.

I well recall these endless moaners in my industry, engaged in angry protest, meetings and such like, telling the rest of us the end was neigh, that the FSA had ruined the provision of FS for average clientele, and on an on they went

All a total waste of their energy and time. In the meantime lots of sanguine folk just gone on with life, adapted and prospered.
