Nissan already have a plant and a complex supply chain in place. Along with an established highly trained workforce. Upping sticks and moving elsewhere isn't that straightforward.

Yes I was conducting a thought experiment.

If we transport ourselves back to the mid eighties would Nissan have made the decision to build a car plant to service the EU if we'd been trading on WTO terms? I think not therefore that investment can be considered as being related to our membership of the EU or single market.

another thought experiment would be ; in 1984 if Nissan wanted to build a plant to sell into the UK market with WTO rules, where might they have built it?

Far East, or wherever their main EU sales hub was.

    A better question would be:

If Nissan wanted to build a plant to sell into the UK (WTO) and EU markets, where might they build it?

Do they build it in the country with a population of ~60million, or in a trading block with ~500 million?

The trouble with all these is that you're talking "what if's" again.
Which bear no correlation to the real world.
    Useless contemplation, frankly.

Because it doesn't matter where or what might have, does it?
Because what has happened is that Nissan have a factory in Sunderland and Nissan have further invested in this factory.

    End of, IMHO.

Maybe they could've built a much smaller plant in the UK. With WTO rules though they've got the whole world to choose from so I'd guess far-east or the big plant they would've built in Europe instead of Sunderland.

I'm reasonably sure the Nissan plant in Sunderland wouldn't have been built if we didn't have tariff free trade and free movement of goods within the EU. 60% of the UK's car exports are sold within the EU. Crikey we've not found a benefit to being in the EU have we?

Very true. Nissan have decided to further invest, after some private assurances from May herself. Nissan will also have no moral issue with moving the whole production facility (for future generation vehicles) over to the continent if they feel they need to. They may even attempt to sue the government if Mays assurances turn out to be lies.

It matters if you're trying to understand the effects of brexit on future manufacturing investment in the UK. Seems reasonably clear that without access to the single market many foreign companies wouldn't have chosen to make that initial investment.

Nissan has many plants throughtout the world : if tariff were insignificant in their decision not to service the UK needs from the UK then I guess they would insignificant in servicing EU from the UK

I'm quite aware of that thank you but posters on here do have the luxury of posting nonsense for which they are unaccountable and get cheap thanks from the similarly ignorant and prejudiced.

And it was all so avoidable with just a bit of common sense and realism (so lacking on the left.). Cameron was right. Full Stop. End off.
Like Tricky Trees it's all so simple for you isn't it!
Merkel is an idiot. She was wrong about the refugees and she was wrong in the way she dealt with Brexit. I feel sorry for the Germans no matter who they vote for - they always end up with Merkel
    .[/QUOTE]
Merkel has achieved more as a world leader and will be respected more in Europe than any of the shower we have at present. Brexit hasn't started yet!

I think what you are both attempting to say is that it matters if you are a remain voter who remains unhappy with the realities of democratic process here in the UK.
Because until the proverbial sky does indeed fall on your heads, the rest is nothing more than speculation.

If you really and honestly want to know the effects of Brexit you will - like everybody else - have to wait and see.
Your attempted suggestions as linked above are nothing more than sour grapes.
    And it shows.
