In Sydney apples typically sell for $4-5 (£2.00-2.50)/kg.

The fact is that selling to a market of 500,000,000 is cheaper than selling to one of 24,000,000 and that is reflected in the price Aussies and Europeans pay. Petrol is a lot cheaper in Aus because we don't pay stupid levels of tax. Food is a lot more expensive because we are a much smaller market than Europe.

so what would you say: that aus is say 20% poorer than the UK because of the regulatory costs and NZ say 40-50%?

    what would your estimate be

PS most real economists recognise that the EU isn't one single market as people's preference vary

It's a lot more complicated than that.

You can't do double blind tests in economics so it's impossible to state that one country is richer than another for a particular reason. If pressed I would say that the reason Aus is slightly better off than the UK is:

    1. Lots of resources, easily accessed
    2. Smaller Government

PS Your PS is risible. Stone me. Not a single market as people have different preferences. Back on ignore with you.:rotfl:

smaller government presumably implies fewer regulations
the EU is not noted for fewer regulations

as far as preferences are concerned ; you really ought to read up some economics about the EU

It costs the UK at lot less to pay for part of a standards agency than to pay to run one herself just as it costs farmers a lot less to adhere to one standard than 28 standards.

If you want out of Europe because you hate the EU or because you don't like foreigners or for any other reason fair enough but don't kid yourself that there is a good economic reason for leaving. At the very best there is no net loss from leaving in the long term after some short term pain. The reality is that the most likely economic outcome is poor for the UK.

Per the FT's video, the UK had output per head well below the average of similar economies (France, Germany and Italy) in 1973/4 and now is considerably ahead. What happened? Well lots of things bit one is the EU.
in 1973 only one member of the family worked, now the husband and wife both works.. thats why we are richer,
,:) bye bye :) and in 1973 we were still paying of are debt for the war and germany and japan was getting lots of hand outs. look it up ...your turn

Are you trying to claim that women in France, Germany and Italy don't work? It seems a bit silly. Germany has a woman as Chancellor, the IMF is run by a French woman and the largest company in Italy (ENI) is run by an Italian woman!

I can't imagine that there are too many left alive that remember Dads Army first time around let alone the Second World War!

Do people seriously bring up WW2 still? It ended 70 years ago. Do they still talk about the Stanley Matthews Cup Final and how heavyweight boxing isn't the same since they introduced the round limit?
