Interesting piece in the Economist. How a brexit would not only weaken Britain and the EU, but The West as a whole.

    (and bendy bananas ;))

I'm sure the great and good will write many articles saying that a nuclear winter will occur if we leave the EU : just like they did when we didn't join the euro.

I see that 85% of ex senior military people don't think that security will be adversely affected by the UK leaving the EU.

it is indeed absurd to expect a consumer to decide for themselves whether to buy an apple which is 3/4 red or one only 1/2 red

and yet they get a vote about whether to stay or go from the EU

    Not so much.

What would be absurd would be Europe voluntarily going back to a position whereby farmers exporting across the continent had to produce food to 27 different standards. Only a fool would vote to do that.

It is therefore perfectly possible that the UK electorate might vote to leave, and then having had a look at the terms of leaving, decide that they didn't like them, and vote to stay after all. As Article 50 (3) makes clear, the treaties cease to apply "from the date of entry into force of the withdrawal agreement", thus if the coming into force of the withdrawal agreement was contingent on approval by a referendum, it would not come into force, the treaties would remain in place, and the UK would remain in the EU.

With such a two referenda set-up (which is not in line with the referendum question agreed, the rEU would have no incentive in giving the UK any access to the Common market, to force the public into accepting the whole package.

Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.

It costs the UK at lot less to pay for part of a standards agency than to pay to run one herself just as it costs farmers a lot less to adhere to one standard than 28 standards.

If you want out of Europe because you hate the EU or because you don't like foreigners or for any other reason fair enough but don't kid yourself that there is a good economic reason for leaving. At the very best there is no net loss from leaving in the long term after some short term pain. The reality is that the most likely economic outcome is poor for the UK.

Per the FT's video, the UK had output per head well below the average of similar economies (France, Germany and Italy) in 1973/4 and now is considerably ahead. What happened? Well lots of things bit one is the EU.

I guess the cost of apples in Aus is prohibitive due the the regulation costs : how do you manage or do you do without all fruit and vegetables

In Sydney apples typically sell for $4-5 (£2.00-2.50)/kg.

The fact is that selling to a market of 500,000,000 is cheaper than selling to one of 24,000,000 and that is reflected in the price Aussies and Europeans pay. Petrol is a lot cheaper in Aus because we don't pay stupid levels of tax. Food is a lot more expensive because we are a much smaller market than Europe.
