I suspect a Brexit will provide an opportunity for me and others in my industry to bring in more skilled workers from outside of the EU.

I admit it's a purely selfish angle. The opposite exists. Karren Brady is worried about the negative impact a Brexit will have on attracting top footballers here!

I don't know - yesterdays migration figures for non-EU immigration show that this is very high too.... I know it includes students but nevertheless seemed high to me...

I'm confused: in what what way do migrants differ from the native born?

Well most British people can't afford to live in London so I'm surprised that so many East Europeans can....

lots of UK people live in London : probably about half London is native born

they can live there because they accept living poor housing conditions i.e flat share, HMO etc : otherwise London is cheap and has plenty of jobs

It's been a struggle getting materials science researchers here from places like China.

Ridiculous really. We are at the start of a period where a material like graphene will literally transform the way we see engineering capability. It's the route to higher value jobs, yet all we hear about in the news is how we will be short of people to pick our vegetables.

In a few decades time we won't use people to pick vegetables. We won't need people in warehousing.

I best stop now, given that Robo-apocalyptic threads get banned!

I see in other news that there is concern over the number of UK teachers leaving to work elsewhere in the world.

It feels a bit hypocritical to me. The government want us to remain in the EU and enjoy the benefits of free movement of labour here, yet there is discontent over allowing UK people to move elsewhere!

I'd be encouraging more UK workers to ply their trade across the world, especially in developing countries.

Tbh I'm baffled as to how east Euopeans can afford to live in Britain particularly London?

Because many of the Eastern Europeans that come to London are skilled, well paid workers.

There were plenty of Eastern Europeans in the Investment Banks I worked in. A self-employed plumber in London must be earning £50/hr at a minimum surely.

The biggest difference I can see is that you seem to want to control population size by controlling the number of non-natives, but if the native born population were to grow of its own accord you wouldn't impose such a control on the native population.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

    Absolutely
I am a reasonable person who simply wishes the best practical outcomes for the people of the UK.

    what do you wish for?

So wouldn't they get in anyway even if we left the EU?

given the huge numbers of well educated east Europeans, one wonders why their own countries aren't booming and why the people of the UK aren't flocking there to find work.

maybe the dead hand of the euro and EU bureaucracy stops them progressing: maybe if they all broke away and formed self governing states with light touch regulation then they could all boom.
