Not Buying It- A Consumer Holiday 2016

  • Evening everyone

Did survived my dentist appointment :-) Well, for someone who just a year ago decided to see a dentist for the first time in 8 years, having a wisdome tooth removed without being sick from anxiety for a week before is a big acchievement.
Don't look like a hamster with mumps, not much pain either, but very hard to eat as I can't open my mouth properly... But I did managed to eat a jam doughnut cut in small pieces, so it isn't too bad :-)

Did some shopping over the weekend. Ordered some knitting needles as I knit best with plastic needles. Needed circular needles in size 8 and since postage from Germany is 10€ I decided to rather order all the sizes I will need in the nearer future than just the one I need now.
And bought a lovely purple yarn from a girl from my knitting group on Sunday. Got it for half the price she paid and it is just the colour I was looking for for a scarf. Already casted on a testrun for what is calle the Raspberry Stitch.

Suki, congratulations on your new job! Hope you'll feel much better until next week!

Tattabubbly, congratulations! Hope everything goes well!

  • Congratulations Tatabubbly that is wonderful news!

Congratulations tatabubbly - I am sure you will manage to save for the baby - its security will be a motivation for you both! :j

dND - I know how you feel - when I worked in a Chazzer I used to look at the donations and felt completely baffled how folks had enough money to afford to buy stuff and then just chuck it away!! We used to get stuff such as a whole kitchen sets (toaster/kettle/tea coffee containers/ knife block etc) all matching and from Next or M&S just because the colour was no longer fashionable! Mind blowing! Still at least us thrifty folk profit from it - most of my china and cutlery come from there or mates/acquaintances who are throwing away!! :D
Mind you now that I am trying to minimise stuff I am finding tons of stuff that I had squirreled away and not used! :o

Anyway today was another NSD and am sitting wrapped in a blanket as the heating is off now and have wheat bag on my feet to keep em warm! :rotfl: so the energy companies are not gonna get more outa me than necessary! Also tea tonight was yesterdays rice + 2 Linda McCartney rosemary sausages which I bought last week (pack of 6 frozen on offer in Morr!sons for £1). These sausages are very useful as they keep in the freezer and can be cooked from frozen and provide a quick tasty tea!
    Nite all
Aim for Sept 17: 20/30 days to be NSDs  NSDs July 23/31 (aim 22) :j

Very definitely not a NBI day here but a planned spend in its own way.

I've streeeetched from the weekend as today is an XXL day at Lidls here. Most of the items are very rarely on a reduced price offer so the only reduction is when the up the quantity.

So 6 boxes of cat food with 2 extra packets each, in effect a free box; my dishwasher tablets (40 + 8extra), the olive liquid soap refill that I use as shower gel as well 25% extra, a kilo packed of sliced gouda at a good reduction in price per kilo, 3kg of apples for the price of 2kg etc., etc.. Plus the fresh food shop that was outstanding from the weekend :D

So I shouldn't need to go shopping for the cats or myself for a week or so but sometime before the weekend I will need to get hay for the alpacas. Thinking about it, I think that 80% or more of my spend is on food for the various animals (cats, alpacas, chickens, goldfish and wild birds), they eat better than I do! :rotfl:

Given my hatred of the phrase "must have", I very much liked this blog post

Brilliant...I really loved this and there is some of those 'must haves' which we could all do with having.

  • Congratulations Tattabubbly....it is definitely going to be an exciting new year for you and Mr Tattabubbly.

    hi everyone,

We I have to admit I spent £117.34 (full price £258.21) today in the Boots sale, I do this every year and budget for it in advance for the things I buy. I generally sort out mothers day gifts, and birthday gifts for other close relatives throughout the year.

This year though, I did think a little more about this and went with a specific gift list, rather than my normal 'grab a bargain' mentality.

This does save me money over the year and I was also delighted to learn I have £42.91 worth of points to spend, which should keep me in essential toiletries for a good few months.

  • Thanks very much everyone! :) me and hubby are delighted.

Feeling very frugal today even though I had small spends. Enjoyed hot coco with a friend I haven't seen in ages, feeling good as I didn't order a croissant! Then managed to pick up some 40c bargains for my sisters hen party I'm throwing for here, we are on a budget so delighted to get some bits we will defo use.

Heading tomorrow for a spa day courtesy of a voucher I got for my wedding that will be expiring in 3 weeks, should be lovely and not a penny spent by me!

Fridge is looking a little empty but I pulled any old veggies I had out and I've thrown them all in a big pot which is bubbling away for surprise beef veggie stew :D OH was saying the fridge was looking empty and I'm trying to get him in the way of thinking that it's actually a good thing as we have little food waste

Day 13/366 Small spend at the Co-op. Managed to get more reduced items with which to fill the freezer. I only buy useful things that we will actually eat rather than shiny fattening things with no nutritional value. I am quite naughty enough without bringing in more temptation! Was quite pleased because this little pitstop was on my way home from work and I was able to pick up a load of coffee related recycling which is done via the Terracycle scheme. It gets sent off and they make a donation to the charity which collects it. I need to pay my Morris dancing subs tonight.

  • Not been on internet for few days as laptop was seriously ill. Thought it had died for good, but I managed to bring it back to life, so am very happy I do not have to spend on a new one, despite the fact that I would really love a shiny new tablet instead of clunky old laptop with broken touchpad!

I have been NBI while not on the internet (easier to NBI when you have no access to amazon!) - having cheap (and healthy) soup for lunch at work (also managing to get roughly one of 5 a day in doing so), and not been able to find much time to get to shops, so forced Not to Buy It.

Did manage to get birthday pressie for niece later in year at very reduced price, and have made list of all family pressies needed during year, with dates and ages, so can plan rather than panicking and spending more than need to at last minute. I have two ticked off already (yay!). (I keep a stock of generic pressies in for the kids' classmates' parties, but I like to make more effort for family, so need to plan).

I loved the slow your life blog - I've been doing a 'life edit' this last year, for the sake of my sanity - having a full time job, two young children and a house in process of being completely done up leaves little room for extras so have been trying to edit out the bits I don't need, and am feeling more relaxed as a result. NBI fits perfectly with this, definitely less stressed the less stuff we have!

I am a fan though of getting what you need to make life easier/more enjoyable and free up time (time is very precious to me as I have so little of it), and this can often lead to NBI in the long run too - e.g. buying a decent hand-blender which means I can easily whizz up free fruit from garden/foraging to go in my very fussy DS's porridge, instead of buying toddler fruit puree pots to put in, like I used to. Or buying decent hair clippers and hairdressing scissors so I can cut all our hair at home instead of spending time and money on hairdresser trips. Both those items have def paid for themselves in the long run and saved me time too. We've also invested in a really nice TV, then we buy DVDs when they're cheap, as we love watching films, but rarely get to go to the cinema. Much nicer to watch in comfort of own living room with glass of wine!
