You don't have to open the account by 28 February. You must APPLY by 28 February, and your application must be subsequently accepted.

You're right. I skim read the full T&C for the switching offer :o (and incorrectly attached the end date of the Offer Period to the successful opening of the account)
In my defence, that has been the case in the past,

    Slaps own wrist:p

If you can be bothered, I would ask the bank staff to point out this requirement to you. They will not be able to do so, because it does not exist.

Having said all that, I fear you will be hard pressed to get the account opened before 28 February, which is the end date of the current offer.

Do let us know how you get on.

I did point out that I had accounts with several other banks & none of these had imposed such restrictions. To be honest, in the end I told her that I would not be going ahead & she asked me if I wanted her to cancel the application which was done there & then.
  • Finally got through to the switching team this morning.

Debit card had not been ordered. It now has been.

Switch has also been started and they will honour the £120 when the switch completes.

Thank you for the gee up @jennifer_jane

Been to the branch today. My account opening letter was dated 9th Feb.

He ordered the card for me straight away, switching requested - completion date 7th March.

Internet banking and mobile app sorted.

For what it's worth, I went into branch too. Switch date shown to me on the screen. However switch date came... no switch. Apparently the branch staff didnt tick a box. I'm 99% sure she did, though. When the switch was actually actioned, I got notified by the other bank (co-op) so had more confidence.
  • My account was finally theoretically opened yesterday, apparently, and the details are in the post. I have initiated the switching procedure already, for completion 10th March. Apparently I need to wait until I've read some nonsense they are sending me and then call back. I'm going to call back on Saturday claiming to have received it and get on with it. FD just emails it to you and you can call back immediately... Still, £120 worth all this. It's not been THAT arduous.

Unfortunately, bank staff, not just those employed by HSBC, have a habit of making up their own terms and conditions:mad:

Indeed! I had to go into the branch twice (due to their incompetence) while trying to get my account opened, then again to sign docs to get the switch completed in time. The first time I was in there, I was told I needed 2 Direct Debits to get the switching bonus. The third time I was in, I was told I had 70 days from opening account to switch and get the bonus.
  • List the number of things you have learnt from banking with HSBC

1 - They claim you didn't "tick" a box to initiate the switch but you know you did when you supplied the banks details you are switching from.

2 - They say they can't tell you certain things over the phone because you don't have sort code yet, but when you call back with it later that day, they still won't tell you anything, forcing you to go into branch completely unnecessarily and find out you were right all along.
3 - You can't set up a Direct Debit online to pay their credit card balance; you have to request a Direct Debit mandate by post.
