Does anyone know how HSBC assign sort codes? Is it your local branch ?
Edit: oh dear I won't switch lots of people having trouble.
No, switch and watch it: then complain! It's worth it for £120 plus compensation. I am glad, however, that it wasn't my main account. I'd be concerned about important stuff going into the account.
Re the codes, I applied online and that is the sort code which I've been given. I checked this with the branch I went into and that's what they told me. HSBC didn't allocate a local branch sort code.0 -
Well, it got to 4PM, no switch has occured, so I called them to complain. Even though I went in branch and saw everything on the screen, the switch wasnt "ticked" apparently, so now it's been set up to go through on the 24th. 10 minutes later after rejecting the first offer of £60, I asked for £100 to cover my time and stress, and now I'm happy, I think! pays for a night out at least.
Exactly what happened to me - everything done and recorded, but not that last little tick. Thank you, branch, you've got me a nice little incentive.0 -

Thanks, they do for business. Does not matter really.
I will open the account, and then switch, once they have set it up properly. If.:D0 -
My switch went through ok, although I had to visit the branch which was a faff. I have never received a debit card though...so just making the pay in's and will see if I receive the £120 in another month or so.0

I wouldn't wait. There is only 30 days for the switch to be completed (if the T&C's haven't been changed) from the account's being opened. You need 7 days for the actual switch, and everything takes so long to arrive and to happen, that I would recommend doing what is required to get things moving. It took 5 days to get the letter telling me what the account number was.
When I went into branch, nothing had been done - debit cards not requested, telephone banking stuff, secure key codes and so on.0 -

Well done - finally - to the switching team. I now have £220 in my account, and I'm waiting for my wine to arrive, and the switch to be finalised on Tuesday.
My wine arrived today. Beautifully and expensively packaged in good quality bright red wrapping paper, and a very fetching HSBC logo'd ribbon. The wine itself was in some interesting air-filled wine protector thing, and the whole thing in a box. The wine is a French "Mon Roc" Carignan Merlot, costing roughly £6 a bottle. It was courier delivered. There was a nice little typewritten card saying sorry, and then apologising for the switch problems.
They know how to send out gifts, it seems.
We shall raise a glass to HSBC, but also to the forum members who bother to post about deals and what to watch out for. Thanks to you all.
Have a beer on me: :beer:0 -
Thanks JJ, if you hadnt told us about the compensation perhaps I would be £100 worse off
Wouldnt have minded the wine, too!0 -

Haha...that made me laugh. A bank who know how to send gifts but not open, operate or switch accounts efficiently!0 -
Applied for the account on 06/01, was approved but all I've had is the switching offer t&c's - i have no account number or debit card.
I called and was told my account was opened immediately, but there is a 2-3 week backlog in getting all the docs out.
Apparently someone from the switching team will call tomorrow - but I don't expect to get much sense from them as I don't have an account number.
It's a bit cheeky to give you only 30 days from when the account is open, when you've got a 2-3 week backlog between accounts being opened and actually getting it to the customer!
I expect problems...I've now missed the 30 day window and I don't even have a debit card, account number or online banking details yet...
The only paperwork I did actually receive in all that time was a letter asking me to provide a specimen signature. They claim it didn't arrive and require it again - based on the experiences in this thread I think it's more likely they just lost it.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
What a clueless bank this is.
Account opened 27 January, account number and sort code advised in a second letter dated 4 February. Heard nothing since.
No debit card, chequebook, telephone pin or online access details received yet.
Rang the number on their letter to state I wished to take advantage of their switch offer. Apparently I need to speak to the other bank to initiate the switch to HSBC???
Nonsense of course. I'll try again tomorrow. If the switch has to complete by 27 Jan + 30 days = 26 February I guess it won't happen. Perhaps this is their plan.0
