Today's HSBC experience: phoned the switch department direct. They say that the person I spoke to in-branch hadn't clicked on one final button. She made a big point of saying they would go back to the branch and getting things looked at. I went over the reasons why I was upset (and I genuinely am rather shocked by the whole ridiculous experience).

Was offered another £50, my full incentive within 2 days (not waiting the 70 days), and a bottle of wine (could have chosen between flowers, chocolate, or the wine - white, red, or rose - no champagne unfortunately even though I hinted at a prosecco).

So with some luck my switch will now have gone through by next Tuesday. They had all the details.... it was just that the branch employee hadn't made one final click.

I feel for the staff, but I will have got £220 and a bottle of wine out of it, so that will alleviate the shock and upset. As always, everyone has been delightful to deal with, but clearly HSBC are unable to open a basic bank account and do a normal switch, even though they are obviously looking for new personal accounts presumably to raise their volume market share.

Switch team phone number is 03455873430, if anyone needs it.

On 25th Jan I received "Your application has been accepted" letter
I returned my signature record form.

I called on the 9th Feb to switch my account. This would be done by 22nd Feb. They were to call me on 12th Feb. They didn't call so I called today and they said the wrong button was pressed!! - switch started today will be completed by 23rd Feb.

However, I still haven't received any security numbers, telephone banking numbers or debit card!!

HSBC have too many telephone numbers, most of which take you to an automatic call steering system, that has you pressing lots of numbers before connecting you to music-on-hold.

The number JJ gives above, for the switching team, seems to bypass the call steering and goes straight to music-on-hold.

Now I just need to wait for the switching person to come back from his/her lunch!

Does anyone know if it's easier (there doesnt seem to be a quick link within online banking) and how quickly I could apply for a 2nd HSBC basic bank account after opening? Will their most basic account be adequate for a doner account?

    cheers

I think that if there's one thing this thread should show, it's that there have to be easier donor accounts to open than with HSBC!

Well, my switch date was supposed to be today.

My donor account still has its balance and is active :(
  • I'm a long time reader but never posted before so I thought I should start contributing and doing my bit!

    My HSBC experience:

As with many of you I guess I have done nearly all the switching offers but this was my worst experience and is in fact the only bank to reject my application if my memory is correct. I applied online but for some reason there was a discrepancy in the application so I needed to go into branch to show ID and bank statements. Bit of a nuisance but not too onerous. I was told I should here back within 5 working days if not to call them. I called after 5 working days and was told they could see my application but couldn't comment anything specific. I called another week or two later and was told similar. I phoned a third time last week and was told the reason was apparently the fact that I had not put my middle name in the online application. I was told the account was open but that I should go into branch to add my middle name. I went into branch this morning to be told that they could see a pending application but that it hadn't gone through yet and so I went through the application all again and incidentally my middle name was on the application already... Anyway the application was rejected but I'm not too bothered; just glad based on my experience and others on this thread that HSBC is not my main bank account!

Tragen - I have read somewhere when doing a previous switch that there is a specific time it will be done by so it still may happen, I guess it could be written in any documentation they have sent you or the switch guarantee.

    Long first post lol!

HSBC is one of the worst banks I've dealt with and their online interface is also the worst I've used. It's like a mish-mash of First Direct's old fashioned text-based interface with a sort of more modern style.

Haven't checked if I've got the £120 yet but I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't get it automatically with their ridiculous 30-day limit on transfers combined with their policy of taking 2 weeks to post vital information out.
