Carboot, I would buy a new machine. As you say the old one could break down again and you might just be throwing more money away getting it fixed. I guess with the sales you might be able to pick up a new one for a good price at the moment.
In view of your recent successes here is a special challenge just for you: Sell the old washing machine for more than the cost of a new one!
I concur, I was wondering about selling the old one, I know metal merchants will buy for scrap but they don't pay that much. Interesting challenge0 -

It IS true that you will be able to sell it - between £5 asnd around £40 depending on make and (to some extent) what the fault is.
Brilliant ebaying result though ! :T:T0 -

TheBanker,You must be joking about selling it!:rotfl:. Was thinking of putting it on Freecycle for well, free;). I like to give something back if I can (not that I ever have much to dispose of as I tend to run things into the ground:o), and Freecylers have been very good to me in the past:T. Might be OK as a spares or repair job(if the new owner is handy and can DIY it). Otherwise, if I buy a new one from somewhere online I'm going to have to pay to get the old one taken away. This way I don't make any money but won't lose any either and someone might get something useful for nothing:j0 -

Sell it where, though? It's very rural here and I know from bitter experience that nobody ever wants the hassle of getting here and finding us for low-value stuff:mad:, although they bother to come if it's totally free!0 -

OH is always taking stuff to the scrap merchants:rotfl:. Will see what he has to say, although he'll ask for a share of any proceeds for his time and trouble:(0 -
OK - this one's not worth much but as every penny counts... If you have a Boots Advantage Card, log into your account and check what offers are available. I just found an offer for 50 free points (worth 50p) when I next make a purchase (of any amount) in store. You have to load the offer to your card through the website, and the offers are personalised so other people might not have the same offer. It's worth checking though.
Thanks for that tip:T. I never think to go online to check my Advantage Card account, I just use it on the rare occasions I'm in the shops.0 -

I know when we got rid of ours there was a man who would come and collect for free. He then took to scrap merchants with other metal he had acquired and get money for it. Not sure how much though. No chance scrap merchant would come to you and offer price instead od OH wanting a cut?0 -
