I'm thinking of changing supplier to Bulb but I'm concerned with them only offering a variable tariff with the market looking to be moving up rather than down.

What are people's thoughts on this?

Bulb are lowering their gas prices on 21 March 2019 due to falling wholesale prices, Bulb have previously said they would reduce their prices as soon as wholesale prices dropped to a certain level. I've been with them for 10 months and do check from time to time on comparison sites if they are still competitive and really any savings by switching are fairly minimal and not worth bothering with.

I signed up to bulb for roughly 11 months and was quoted £68 a month originally. Towards the end, my DD was sitting at £89 a month after 3 price hikes even though my account was permanently £100+ in credit. When I cancelled, I got a refund of £170 something.

I was quite happy with their service, even if their DD estimates are overzealous (I gave meter readings whenever they asked but still ended up heavily in credit). As a company and no exit fees, it's not a bad deal but you need to stay on top of market rates and switch when competitors start to be more appealing.

I heard before that they were going to lower prices in line with wholesale prices but never got one during my time to my recollection. Overall, I found the variable tarrif quite pricey and ended up costing me more in the long run as I didn't stay on top of the market rates since I was moving house. Might have just been bad timing on my side but I lost trust in variable tarrifs. After I moved house, I decided to jump on a fixed deal.

According to MSE Energy Club, my fix is still the cheaper but if the March price cut does come, that may change. I don't think I ever received the MSE Energy Club cashback for switching to Bulb or to my current supplier now that I think about it, so don't factor cashback into the annual cost as it doesn't seem to be guaranteed. I think that's 3 times it hasn't come through (one time for my mothers switch) and MSE just say they can't do anything if the supplier doesn't pass on the referral money.

I'm trying to switch to Bulb using a referral code but cannot as I get an error on the web page.

Contacted Bulb by email as there was a long wait on the phone, said I cannot use a referral code through a comparison web site.

I'm not, I clicked on the referral link my friend sent me.

I've never heard of a referral link not working.

It should be of the same format as those on this thread

    Check again with your friend.

At what point did the referral link error, when you clicked it or after you gave dd details?

It maybe the information they hold for your address is out of date which is throwing an error, supplier only get updates from the national database once every 3 months for gas.
  • I tried to join Bulb back in early February when we were told Economy Energy had gone bust. Got the "hello" email saying that i would be switched over on the 23rd February. I waited. And waited. When my new pre pay key didn't turn up I rang up Bulb who told me that my switch over had been cancelled (by them). But I was then told my transfer would go ahead and I would become a Bulb member on the 5th March and a new key would be sent out.
However on the 6th March I still hadn't received a key so I rang Bulb to ask how I top up my meter. Got told to go to a supermarket, give them my key and they can top it up there. I said this would be fine if I had a key..
I was then told that they would send me a key out but it would take a few days. As I had just £3.10 on the meter this was unacceptable so they agreed to ring me back with a code to reprogram my existing key. I took key and code up to the shop to get it done and was told that the next time I tried to top up this key at a paypoint it would scramble it again, so I emailed the operative who had given me the code to ask if this was true.
    No reply.
At 10:19 this morning on the 11th March I had to email another operative at bulb to ask again if my key would be scrambled if I tried to top it up and could they please check that they have actually got an official top up key sent out to me. I would have thought that they would treat this with a bit of urgency seeing how they made a complete mess of my original transfer.
I will let you all know if I ever get any replies.

If I swap to Bulb today and they reduce prices on the 21 March will this mean I automatically get the lower prices? Thanks

I think the answer is yes - Bulb are pretty straightforward on that.
  • Bulb are the best Supplier that I have dealt with to date.
  • Got an email the next day saying the new key had been sent out. Still haven't received it.
