On the subject of reward credit cards, last week I rang up to cancel my Amex Preferred Rewards Gold card before the card anniversary (didn't want to pay the £140 fee). I referred Mr W-J a couple of months back so we're now working on achieving our second lot of 22,000 bonus miles.

Completely painless to cancel and the chap I spoke to actually advised me that if I wanted to come back then if I waited six months I'd qualify again for the welcome bonus! I knew this was the case but was really surprised that they actually advise customers of it. Needless to say, I'll be applying again if the deal stays the same - at least 53,000 miles a year (62,000 if Mr W-J can refer me too) between us plus those accumulated through normal spending is just marvellous!

And you try spending them. I'm sitting on more than half a million adios and a 241 voucher that runs out next week. 2 years I've been trying to use it but never has any First class seats come up to Vegas or PHL with a reasonable gap between outbound and inbound.
I did once have a booked CW trip using the 241 but with over £1k in fees and taxes to pay on top of using 100K avios I found a good deal going from DUB that cost a little over that and I collected avios instead of using them. So canceled the reward flight.
I use my Avios now only for hotel bookings
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

We fly on Sunday. Get very excited, but packing is doing my head in. One minute I am packing for summer, the next I am swapping items for cooler temperatures.

I doubt you will need summer clothes, think more spring or autumn.
It can get pretty chilly in the casino's with the air-con as well.

I'm flying Monday week and will not be packing for summer ;)

It's definitely cooler today. A lot.
Max temp forecast for today is 16C. Was about 24C yesterday.

I remember when we went in November in 2004, one day it was rather hot, the next it was pouring it down. It was hard to know what to wear.
It was quite comical playing crazy golf in Circus Circus in the Adventuredome and trying to putt the ball around puddles. And going into the Venetian and seeing buckets on the floor 'cos of the leaking roof :rotfl:
When we went in October 2006, we arrived and it started thundering and lightening. And the lightening was going across the sky instead of coming down IYSWIM. The next day it was reported that it was the heaviest rainstorm LV had had for 10 years. We took that as perhaps it was a good sign, because apparently there had been a bit of a drought - unfortunately the luck fairy didn't :(:rotfl:

  • Thanks for all the advice. We normally go in May, and I think I have a mindset that I am struggling to adjust. Off to add a couple more cardigans to my case.

Cardigans are good. I always bring two or three whenever we are there.

We haven't had any problems with Virgin. I suppose we're lucky because we're flexible with dates but we haven't had any trouble redeeming for reward seats for three years running

  • Any Groupon codes about, apart from FAMILY.
FAMILY will not work on Spice Market buffet.
Not desperate for it, but might buy with a decent code.
