We have stayed downtown at Main Street Station Hotel a couple of times lately.
Every trip we like to visit Fremont street at least once for the evening,but getting the sdx bus back up the strip late on is a pain.
So we now just book a couple of nights at MSS.We think it's a lovely little hotel/casino.Its got a nice feel of old school Vegas,rooms aren't anything special,but do us for a couple of nights...usually to drunk to care after a night on Fremont.They have a nice cheap weekend champagne brunch for silly money,about $12 I think,still have coin in machines,and best of all NO RESORT FEE.:T
Probably wouldn't stay here for more than a few nights,or at all if it were on the strip....but for a cheap way of "doing" downtown Vegas properly,it's fine.
I think others on here have their own downtown options,I'm sure pebblesmax has mentioned El Cortez as their preferred choice downtown....I may be wrong though.
If you only like high end hotels,then I wouldn't bother,but if like us,your happy with less than 5 star,then it's a perfectly acceptable option.....not that you have than many downtown in the first place.0 -
@dontone...
Its a self made deal, couple of hoops to jump through but worth it:
£45 Ryanair - LGW to DUB (inc bags) - 1 way
£10 each towards hirecar in Dublin for 1 day
£30 each for San Juan B&B in Dublin
£364 DUB-LAS (Dub to LGW, then Virgin from LGW to LAS, and rtn part we miss the last leg back to Dublin)
12 of the 14 nights have been comp'd through Mlife & my Host
£15 each towards 2 nights in Luxor hotel
Total - £475 each !
I don't include R Fee's in my costs, hopefully i'll get most of them waived, but will use winnings and some of my express comps to cover that.... Still got the carpark charging to figure out yet !
@photome
When looking at AlamoBrits, compare using Netflights too....
Last year, I booked my 1 way, 1 day SUV hire with Alamo via Netflights, and it cost £35, and then I chose the full fuel option for an extra £7
I usually check those 2 plus rental cars, last twice Alamobrits have been cheapest but best of all is the online check in as mentioned plus they always have new cars (brand new dodge charger last time)0 -

the bit we are struggling with is the first part. we are flying into vegas on the sat morning and then flying to san fran on tues luchtime. plan is to spend 3 nights in vegas somewhere different and then go on. we have booked the golden nugget as we wanted to try downtown for a few nights, but have since seen loads of iffy reviews, its a cancellable room, so we are now looking for a similar sort of priced hotel ideally near Fremont street and wondered if anyone had any personal recommendations.
What are the iffy reviews and where have you seen them (dont tell me you have been reading tripadvisor)
I have stayed at GN its probably the best downtown hotel and it def has the best pool.
have also stayed at California, loved it there, though smaller rooms and casino full of very friendly hawaaiians and of course the Redwood grill with its Tbone special0 -

I wanted to perhaps stay at the GN, but DH wanted to stay on the Strip. But I like the casino at GN, and the atmosphere at Freemont Street, so we'll be having a potter or three around there. BTW, the GN is the one with the shark tank in the middle of the pool isn't it? I think it had just opened the last time we were there and it looked amazing. And I'm not one for lounging around poolsBEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.
comping = nowt more thrillin' than winnin':T :j0 -

always worth checking the usual suspects (and others if you can be bothered
)
edit: and Hertz direct trumped them all for our Boston trip!0 -
I liked the look of the golden nugget because I fancied the shark pool. the reviews seemed to be a few security concerns and also that there were extras added on , for example $10 per use of the coffee maker, which worried me abit.saving for more holidays0

Yes it's me that likes El Cortez Cabana Suites. They are a bit away from Fremont street, but we like the rooms and the lobby area is nice with fresh fruit and sweeties to take up to the room. The gym is ok too. They have a security guard on the main door 24 hours a day, and access is via your room key to get into the building.
We do like the GN too. The rooms are nicer than MSS. The GN pool always seems crowded to me though, unless you go for the hideaway pool which is adults only.0 -
Evening peeps.
Mirage, Venetian, Palazzo & Cosmopolitan.
They are all the same price roughly on Expedia
I'm surprised if Mirage is in the same price bracket, unless it's an upgraded room of some sort? We like Mirage, have only ever had a standard room and it was nice enough...but the others seem to be a step or two above. We love Cosmo, particularly anything above a City room because of the terrace, it's such a great thing to be able to sit outside on the terrace. We love the casino and area, but I would be tempted by Venetian or Palazzo as we have never stayed there.
I don't know if I mentioned that last trip, when we went with my in-laws, the last 3 nights were at Cosmo and we had a terrace studio with a fountain view upgrade booked for them...we weren't that fussed as we have stayed there several times now but wanted to be sure to have a fountain view for them. They upgraded one of our rooms to a wraparound suite for $20 more a night, of course we gave it to my in-laws. It was a low floor and right near the Bellagio sign, but they had a good view of the lake, and my MIL isn't keen on heights, anyway. $20. It was crazy. Those rooms are fantastic.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -

The pool is great but as pebbles says is also VERY busy and you need to get there early for any chance of a lounger
we prebooked the hideout pool which was well worth it
we didnt have any security concerns (2/3 years ago)
we also had free use of the coffeemaker , that may have changed0
