Should I subsidise others' meals?

My sister and I are splitting the cost of Christmas dinner. She had invited 10 family members to her place for it but since has invited more. Our family doesn't have much money, and I can't afford to pay half with the increase in cost. I earn much more than the rest of my family though, so should I ask them to chip in?

How many people in total are going?
How many have you invited?
Can you not suggest everyone chips in?
Is this meal actually taking place or is it a MSE theoretical question?Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
In theory if you are splitting the cost then you split the cost and do not ask for handouts otherwise do not offer to split costs, Rather simple really.0

Don't normally split costs. Everyone coming normally chips in, one brings soup, another desserts etc0

This can make it go further just get another bag of spuds .Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0

I would not expect to charge or be charged for attending a family meal. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

You'll have to suck it up now ... you agreed and it's family.
Having said that, the initial post didn't include enough detail for anybody to really toss their tuppence into this fight.0 -

But the OP said that they had agreed in advance to split the cost.
If it was me, I would pay what we originally agreed. They must have agreed how many were coming, and who... If she wanted to invite dozens of other people, she can fork out the extra money for them. I will only pay for what we originally agreed.
Have to agree with pastures new though, that the OP doesn't really contain quite enough information to give a detailed response.
And I don't expect they will be back to add anything either; they never do when the MSE people do this.Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!
You're not singing anymore........ You're not singing any-more!0 -

The trouble is, it was probably a bit "loose". "Let's go halves" "Yeah, OK" .... but without parameters... so it was easy then for the sister to go round inviting loads of other people because they see it as "splitting the cost" whereas the OP saw it as "going halves on the people I expect to be there"0 -

Presumably the sister's relations are also the OP's?
TBF, if you're cooking a meal for a large number of people, costs for a few extra are going to be pretty minimal, particularly if you're only paying half.0
