    Yes I used to have economy 7 tariffs in my student flat the cheaper price came in at midnight if I remember correctly.
    Washer dryer everything went on after midnight lol.

    I have 2 young children my washer & dryer is on every day without fail am I supposed to not go to work, go shopping or take the kids out because I've got to babysit my tumble dryer don't talk so stupid these products are supposed to make life easier.

    Another comment just proving you have absolutely no idea what other peoples lives are like, and as such should probably stop trying to comment on them.

    Many people will put the dryer on before going out to work, or out for the evening. A working family with two parents and three children will have numerous loads of washing, and could easily be in and out to evening events. Are they supposed to change their lifestyle just so someone can stay in with the dryer.

    I will often put a washload on after work, then pop it in the dryer before going out to a meeting / pub / whatever in the evening. In fact, if you genuinely never go out before your dryer has finished I can only conclude that you rarely use your dryer, don't get out much, or both.

    Sorry, but my post didn't just reflect recalled machines - leaving tumble dryers on unsupervised (Hotpoint or not) IMO is just asking for trouble. Out of all white goods tumble dryer is the most likely to catch fire, there are numerous places telling you not to leave them unattended (including manufactures instructions and the fire brigade)

    You're contradicting yourself, first you point out what a danger tumble dryers are and even reference a local fatal house fire caused by one - yet you're happy to leave yours on unsupervised?

    Once again, I've never said you have to pull up a chair and stare at the thing for 4 hours solid while it's on - I simply mean checking on it more often and being vigilant.

    Both of you have slated me for suggesting you should watch the machine more often than not, but lets face it - what else are you going to do? Its had a safety recall on it and you're now aware it's at a greater risk of catching fire than normal - are you going to continue leaving it unsupervised and risk burning your house/kids to a crisp or be more vigilant?
    Are they supposed to change their lifestyle just so someone can stay in with the dryer.
    Given the above and until the machine has had a repair fitted, yes as it's clearly at a greater risk than normal. If you want to continue using it unsupervised after the repair is completed then that's your prerogative (just make sure you have home insurance in place that will pay out as a result of "burned my house down because I left my tumble dryer running").

    I'll bring up the Beko fridge freezers that burst in to flames that did actually kill a father as he rescued his children from their burning house would you be suggesting that somebody stays awake 24hrs a day 7 days a week until it was repaired just in case it burst into flames.
    There were 500,000 fridge freezers affected so not a 5 minute fix either.

    Unfortunately my life does not stop because hotpoint can't design and manufacture a simple household appliance so it doesn't burst into flames when used.
    Babysitting my dryer for a week or two I could probably live with but we are talking 7 - 8 months before hotpoint can attend to my dryer.

    Then ignore the advice that Whirlpool are offering - your choice.

    Our condensing tumble dryer is only just over 2 years old. Been offered a new one for £99, but as I read somewhere in the many pages of this thread, its about 50mm deeper & will protrude out from the worktop. I read somewhere that some people with the same problem have been offered alternative models to overcome the problem. Consequently I rang 0800 1510905, who advised me to ring 0800 0921922 which I did. The guy I spoke to insisted there are no other options, just the £99 condensing model & the £59 vented model. Does anyone know a contact number where I'll get offered a better choice? Secondly, has anyone managed to find out why some people are being offered free replacements and others are being asked to pay?

    If the replacement machines are not suitable for you then why not wait for yours to be repaired?

    Oh, and you'll be £99 better off. Sounds like a good money saving tactic to me. ;)

    So ITV have had the chief fire officers association on this morning who's advice is to stop using these appliances immediately.

    Whirlpool have fixed 200,000 of an estimated 5 million affected products so working on the basis that in 3 months whirlpool have fixed 200,000 appliances that's 800,000 a year it will take them 6 years to fix every product on paper.

    Then there is the fact that so called repaired tumble dryers have caught fire a matter of hours after the engineer has left the appliance.

    The whole debacle is a joke no one at whirlpool has a clue to what is going on and are lying to customers just to get them off the phone.

    The company should be replacing these dryers not making people wait an excessively long time to have an appliance modified.

    I think the 5 million figure is the total number of affected units sold over the 11 year period, not all of them will still be in use today. Even so - it's still going to take a considerable amount of time for modifications to be completed.
    My previous dryer, bought 7 years ago was one of those affected but I scrapped it just over 2 years ago.
    As for the advice of the chief fire officers association they will no-doubt be accused of over-the-top scaremongering in the next few comments...

    My dryer was recalled while it was still under warranty and I was told I could have a straight swap for a new one. I've been waiting since I registered in November (by which time the one year warranty has expired). Hotpoint are now saying I can only get a new machine if I pay the £59. You can imagine my response to that!

    I paid by credit card. I would like a refund so I can put the money towards buying another dryer (not from Hotpoint, Indesit or Creda). The retailer has said it is not their concern as the machne is now out of warranty. Am I entitled to involve my credit card company?

    Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

    Your statutory rights are with whoever sold the thing to you.

    The Sale of Goods Act and The Limitations Act between them give you the right to seek a remedy from the seller for up to six years following the sale, so I'm quite surprised to hear that the seller saying they have no responsibility.

    The only issue is that is your machine actually faulty?
    The recall is a precautionary measure and my understanding is that not every recalled machine is suddenly going to burst into flames.

    As you paid by credit card, you could seek a remedy from your card issuer under Section 75 of The Consumer Credit Act.
    Maybe read MSE's Section 75 article first.
