  • I don't understand peoples unwillingness to work for what they get, many feel it is a given

Also andygb I have been unemployed and I found myself some voluntary work too do so I felt like I was earning my money, I also did a few of the job that JC+ sent me for, so I don't understand the mentality of some people

Unemployed people are sometimes better off than the employed (especially those on NMW), yet they have the audacity to !!!!! and moan about being treated unfairly, I too have worked 12 - 14 hour days, so don't be giving me none of your idiocy, maybe it is you my friend that is the muppet

But NOT throwing them into forced labour just to make the unemployment figures look good.

but people on workfare are still considered unemployed, are they not, in which case how would it make unemployment figures look better, it makes no sense as the people on workfare are NOT employed so are still considered out of work

If they are NOT employed, then they should not be working at poundland should they? Poundland isn't any kind of training scheme, its a chain of shops that sells tat.

  • My point was not that though was it, I also said in a previous post that maybe workfare is doing things the wrong way around, my point was that your sentiment was incorrect

I started work in 1975, and at times had two jobs and worked 14 hour days - now I cannot get a job - is that so difficult to understand?????

I agree community type work should be allocated but it should be selective. Someone with a good work record shouldn't be lumped in with the career unemployed.
  • but the reason for selection to do such community work would surely only be made to the long-term umemployed (say 18-months plus), therefore giving people with a good work record adequate time to find alternative employment

Those on sanctions are likewise neither employed nor unemployed, those figures tend not to show up on the unemployment figures. ;)

I'm a fully qualified Graphic Designer, I have been paying into this insurance system since 1986, am perfectly capable in cost effectiveness, stock control, graphic design, presentation, desk top publishing and computer aided design. What do you think Poundland could offer me to help further my career??? A sanction or a voluntary job?

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with people working 'for free' if it's a worthwhile job with prospects and a future.

But who the fluff wants 'work experience' in chuffing POUNDLAND?!

I would happily work for free (for work experience) in an animal sanctuary or a school or something, but in crappy POUNDLAND? LOL no thanks! :rotfl:
    cooeeeeeeeee :j
  • And so this thread has turn in to a "MY DAD IS BIGGER THAN YOUR DAD", argument now has it, with your qualifications you should never find yourself out of work then should you

The only skills you will gain at Poundland is if it's your first ever job, so it's not the job someone who has worked for years for should take as 'volunteering' as it will add nothing to their skillset - unless they really want to learn how retail works!

By definition volunteering means you have no fixed hours and can come as go as you please, but the job centre and Poundland give you set hours and you have to ahere to them or could get sanctioned. To me that's just slave labour. I work in TV where years ago there were LOADS of unpaid jobs - it is a highly desirable industry so people decided to work for free. Then soon enough there were hardly any paid Runner jobs - you had to 'do your time' with unpaid work experience - or expenses only jobs. Until some industry experts and seniors stepped up for the rights of the workers and now campaigns and helps people who have had unpaid jobs claim money from that employer as they broke NMW laws. Nowadays if there are any unpaid jobs advertised people report them to these industry experts and pressure is put on the company to take the jobs down or be reported to HMRC.

The only difference with the above and Poundland is it's the government trying to force people to work for free. It makes no sense, the government are still paying the benefits to the individual - when it should be the employer paying for their work. Surely having say 100 people nationwide volunteering at Poundland means 100 less jobs, means £7,000+ a week just on JSA the government is still paying out - a lot more if you including housing benefit and council tax benefit.

As for the OP the way they treated you may have been horrible, but you need to learn to face problems in the right way - talk to the manager and explain the reasons why you are leaving, I hope you at least told someone you were leaving before you left!
