The 8 weeks work experience is voluntary but that won't stop the claimant being referred to the Mandatory Work Activity which is 4 weeks in length.

Voluntary with the JC is more "you don't have to but we will continue to talk to you about it, try to persuade you, glare at you and judge you until you accept."

They did that with me when it came to "voluntary" work experience with Argos a few years back. It involved a lot of heavy lifting which clearly wasn't something I'd be able to do, but the advisor still kept going on about it, trying to persuade me.

That's a terrible attitude. OP walked out after only a few hours. For all he didn't know, Poundland had not been informed that he was starting that day and were in the process of finding out why and getting things ready for him.

Or maybe the other people had a much better attitude so they were prepared to let them go on the till right away whereas they had concerned about OP so wanted to supervise him to get assurance before giving him the same opportunity.

Walking out of a job, whether paid or not after only a few hours does fully deserved a sanction. It's very poor judgement and just inappropriate working behaviour. OP, you might to learn that the world doesn't revolve around you and that sometimes, you have to take breath, show a bit of patience and listen before you go on a huff about things.

you obviously no nothing about these schemes people shouldnt be working for nothing anyway. Its explotation and shows no respect towards people. Take a look at boycott workfare website.

You did the right thing poster by leaving and going to the jobcentre to explain. Nobody with any brain would agree to leave their bag unattended. Everyone should have a locker.

I have lots of experience working on tills and you don't need a dbs to work in pounland they just don't want work experience people to do it.

I don't mind doing volunteer work I like having something to do while I look for work but pounland is not a charity and should pay the staff

And how has this attitude helped your jobsearch?
  • And how has this attitude helped your jobsearch?

It helps because you need to have some respect and confidence in yourself when applying for jobs and avoiding slaving away for a company that should be paying you helps greatly with that.

It also gives you the time to actually do the job searching.

How is it ever a bad thing to not let people exploit you for their own gains?

Under what possible circumstances could Poundland actually use or want to use a "volunteer".
It seems a ridiculous concept. For a job centre to send someone there as a "volunteer".
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Convenient time of year for shops to be having "volunteers" what a racket. I think what isn't thought of is that what is actually happening is poundland are getting a member of staff and the tax payer are paying the wages.

They're a company trying to make a profit and the job centre are offering free staff to them.

Each free staff member means one less person to pay and as much work done as with a paid staff member.

Not surprising that some companies take up the offer. Some companies only care about profit.

Meanwhile the job centre want to appear like they're doing something to help people get into work.
  • This grubby company needs those with a few morals still left to boycott them.
