rubber peeling off sidewall of recently changed tyre - what to do??

I had my front two tyres changed about 6 weeks ago from Halfords. I went for Continental Premium Contact 5 which I thought were good quality. Yesterday I noticed a a good sized chunk (around 1.5 inches long) of rubber just peeling off the sidewall of one tyre. It does not look like I have hit a curb or something and it is just peeling off on its own. I have the receipts and everything.

What do I do, there should be some kind of guarantee, right?
Do I contact Halfords or Continental?
Is it dangerous to drive with this tyre?

Contact Halfords and they should give you a claim form and the tyre will need to be sent back to the manufacturer but tbh I think you'll find it difficult to prove you haven't damaged the tyre yourself.

    You contact Halfords

    Yes it's dangerous

And probably illegal - as well as probably will invalidate your insurance if you have any claim related to driving with a damaged tyre

Is it down to the cords? Sounds like it was cut when it was fitted by the monkeys.

I haven't really lifted the peeled part fearing it might cause more damage so I don't know. It does not look like it has been cut because the edges are irregular. There is no skid mark on the surface around it so I don't think I have hit a kerb - besides I have only driven it about a hundred miles since.

Why would they cut it when it was fitted?

Might be worth taking it back. Can you post up pics?

    Upset any neighbours at all?

If so, then tyres are usually the first thing that gets damaged in a neighbour dispute. Men very rarely f**k with another persons motor, so the culprit would likely be female.

If your sure it's not malicious, then there is the possibility that some fake branded tyres have made it into the supply chain.

Unfortunately retailers are buying fake tyres because the people doing the purchasing don't have a clue what they're doing, they just see numbers and think they can get themselves a promotion by increasing profit margins.

  • I don't think I have p***ed anyone .... (on purpose that is) :).

BTW I called Halfords and they are asking me to bring it to the specific store where I had them changed so they can have a look. Its quite far so I wont be able to go until weekend - lets see.

I have some pics in my mobile. I will try to post them here.

Erm if the tyre is damaged, don't drive on it!

I would be tempted to try and get Halfords to agree to it being checked at a more local store, otherwise you're going to have to either get it towed to the store (unsafe tyre), or swap the tyre for a spare or replacement.

Don't mess around if you've got a potentially damaged/dangerous tyre.

Can you get the spare put on it?
  • I have a full sized spare so yes I will put the spare tyre on and then get this one checked over the weekend.
