Northumbria University is hardly the top of the academic tree in its own right - I dread to think of the standard of the courses it licences to a college!

What sort of grades is she expecting to get?

She's very bright.... When she puts her mind to it. She got Bs in her AS exams, without much studying.

But isn't a 'studier' more turn up and do the work and forget about it.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

It's not a question of worthiness but of academic standards and how employers consider them.

Comparing a degree course taught at a local college to one from the OU just shows how little you understand about the subject, I'm afraid.

Seeing as how you OBVIOUSLY know soooo much more about this, than me and many others on here, then post some links to some statistics, that prove that a degree done at a college is worth less than one done at the OU.

I think it is. I can't believe some of the things I am reading on this thread. :rotfl:

People making stuff up that isn't even there, and people insisting that others know nothing about a particular subject, because they don't agree with what they say.... what on earth is next?!

I am looking forward to Miss Biggles providing the PROOF that College degrees are not worth as much as OU degrees.

I am sure she can provide this, seeing as how she claimed I know very little on the subject compared to her........

Having had 2 major careers, the first as a college lecturer and the second as a careers adviser, it'd be a bit surprising if I didn't know something about the subject.

OU degrees are well regarded by employers and it's ranked highly internationally, with 150,000 undergraduate students.

Compare that to a typical local college with a couple of dozen students and usually poor library and study facilities, taught by lecturers with the sort of teaching loads you associate with secondary schools and, obviously, unlikely to be doing any research.

Then encourage her to get a job and leave degree level study until she's older and knows what she wants to do.

Quite apart from anything else, if she supports herself for 3 years her funding won't be assessed on your household income as she'll be considered to be an independent student. If she does something now, just for the sake of it, and then finds she needs a degree in a different subject she'll have used up her funding at this level and closed doors that will be almost impossible to open.

Also, if she's already studying at this college, don't discount the amount of pressure she may be getting to do a degree there. Like any organisation, it'll be commercially oriented and getting bums on seats is what it's all about, regardess of whether it's in the student's best interest or not.

That's really good advice from missbiggles OP, and trust me I very rarely say that, so I definitely mean it!

(I've never worked in this field, but I have two degrees and have attended four very different universities, hopefully soon to be five, for various courses, so have some experience in the area from a student's perspective.)

    Wow.

You claim to have had '2 major careers' (whatever that means!) and you claim to know more than anyone else on the subject, and that is the best you can come up with?!

What you have posted is nothing more than your opinions, a bunch of hyperbole, and a link that says the OU is actually OK!!!!

I know that and I didn't dispute it. I was saying PROVE that a degree done at college is worth less than an OU degree (or one done at another uni) and all you have done is post YOUR views, and a link promoting the OU.

So it seems you don't know anymore about this subject than me, or anyone else after all!!!

    Thought as much.

Oh and as I said, a degree from college IS just as valid as one from anywhere else. It's pretty obvious, especially when it's the same flippin' degree!

Here's a link that says as much. I am sure there are more. I just can't be bothered to find anything else... In addition, I can't be bothered to debate anymore. I don't think I need to say anything else! I'll just leave you and Person-One to tie yourself up in knots. :)
