Interesting article in the weekend FT about ground rent being seen as an interesting income generator for investors sick of low interest rates on savings etc. Ground rents may be rising hugely over the next decade on.
Advice from Merryn Somerset Webb was not to touch leasehold as you'll never really own the property. At least get shared freehold if one can't get freehold.
Hope you're feeling better now AC.
Will you use the gym enough to make it worthwhile? And what if you end up buying in a different area?

Sounds like you are doing lots of viewings so hope you find something soon. My daughter eventually exchanged contracts today on her flat she is buying in Bristol today after 4 months and moves in next Monday!! This is with a cash buyer (investor) for her house and moving into an empty flat. 4 months - it just staggers me with such a small chain with only her actually moving that it can take so long. I hope your purchase when you find something is less drawn out. At least you don't have Christmas to worry about as it seems like solicitors stop working for a month then.

  • Thanks folks.
I'm doing the viewings , to help me get to know the area and because I have time on my hands. Also, one or. 2 grabbed me location wise and there are pros and cons to work out .
I notice that some places go quickly , so I have to keep looking so I don't miss out on something, that may well suit me.

Congratulations to your daughter enthusiastic. Hope it all pans out for her.
Verbatim. The gym is in branksome . 20 min bus ride . My intention is to go
Daily , little and often . While I have the the time .

Thanks dreaming . The tooth: I stupidly was trying to bite a wire on my
turntable , trying to pull one of the coloured ones to make it longer while changing the plug. All of a sudden , the front tooth flies across the room..
Not painful , but I was in shock . Yes I was that stupid :)
Had a post put on the tooth and it kept falling out and the dentists oukd do no more. So , I think a bridge is the way forward.
As I was in debt for so long , haven't been to dentist for about 6 years .
Practice moved on anyway, and so have I . I was going every six months.
One thing I do notice : once the huge recession came, they were trying to get me to come every 3 months for a checkup. It has always been that ,and will e from now on .
Saturday will be my third 2nd viewing . I think I'm still in a position not to panic , but have to watch budget etc
Will keep you updated on tomorrow's scenario :)

Oh no, AC - we're going to have to come up with a much edgier story than that re tooth. Jealous husband? Tackling a burglar? My dentist is always trying to sell me treatments. Keeps asking me if the stain on my front bottom tooth bothers me as I could have removed at £xxx. Well, as I hadn't noticed it I just told him that I would stop smiling instead (he didn't laugh!).

enthusiasticsaver - hope it all goes well for daughter. I think I have been lucky in that each time I have moved things have gone relatively smoothly despite chains. Only the last one was a bit of a nightmare. I sold to first-time buyers who were lodging in parent's council house - who promptly gave council 4 weeks notice of handing house back to council as soon as offer was accepted. They then kept asking to visit my house with various relatives but didn't want me to be there. I told the EA that as I was working full time and EA had key they could go anytime during the day but no, they could "only" come in evenings/weekends. I put up with 3 visits where I went out for an hour but then put my foot down as I was trying to pack as well. Then they said I was dragging it out and they were going to be homeless (as parents had given up council house) so wanted me to move into rented accommodation, or they would pull out of purchase. I told EA that it was entirely up to them as I was confident I could easily get another buyer. They didn't pull out, but when it came to agree moving date I gave them 3 dates that suited me but they decided none of those were suitable and wanted it a week later! The time scale of all of this - property on market 20th Feb, offer accepted 27th Feb, completion date 10th May. So just about 10 weeks start to finish. I don't think they really knew how all the legal stuff worked, but sadly they split up 6 months later and sold the house.
  • Just tidied up the flat , after another rough night .
The kettle has decided to pack up . Sent landlady text explaining that and asking her what time approx is she arriving .
I assume the kettle is her responsibility ..

If she provided it it's her responsibility. Odd for a L/L to provide a kettle I'd have thought though?

Just saw an article on BBC news page . It could be the same one .
    Food for thought
  • Just had the tea lady phone me twice . Message as well.
I'm going for the polite route , before I block her calls totally .
Unless something tragic has happened , I assume she is bored witless .
