I fail to see how any of this is your responsibility, AC. You are renting a flat where a washing machine is provided ergo, it is your landlady's job to ensure it is working and to do whatever is necessary to replace it with a working one if it is not. I think she is extracting the urine, personally.0

AC - Since you've been feeling (more) poorly than usual and I seem to remember you're not locked into a gym membership, then I wouldn't sign on for another month's use. Just continue to walk - a little more each day and gentle exercise at home.
LL - Truly sorry to hear of your Dad's passing, although pleased it was as peaceful as you'd wished for him. My sympathies to you and your extended family at this time.0 -
AC - I think your landlady should be paying the company to remove old washing machine and install new one too. She did not want you to bring your possessions to the flat so she cannot expect you to have tools available to do diy. If the flat is furnished that means providing washing machine facilities. Text her to tell her what AO have said. They are good normally - we got our dishwasher from them but OH installed it as it costs more to get it installed. They also removed the old one. If you are ill that is even more reason for you to put the onus on landlady.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. Agree with this 100%. I'm sure you are fully competent to do this job but if something goes wrong and, for example, the machine floods the flat who is going to be held responsible? I know you have said that you get on well with landlady but in my opinion that can change in a heartbeat if/when things go wrong. Far better to have a reserved, "professional" relationship. If I were you I would contact her and tell her that you are not able to fit the machine yourself (no need to give any reason) and that she needs to contact any electrician or tradespeople herself (or agent if there is one).
I know it is nice to get on with people, and I understand that you may feel a bit "alone" at the moment but she is not your friend, and she is not doing you a favour by renting to you.0 -
Thanks folks ! Totally agree with you all. I will text her ( it's on record then )and tell her the score, and ask her if I'm installing the machine .
I know I will, for a quiet life . But will in my polite way tell her she is taking the you know what .
Thanks0 -
I am in Poole at the moment . Managed to get tools etc .
Just sent landlady a text , letting her know the score .
It's all on record then ,should anything go wrong .
Will disconnect this evening, and we'll see wha her response is and take it from there .

No, no, no - don't ask her if you are installing it - tell her you are NOT.
You can still be polite (but firm). There are some people who will play on other's good nature to shift their own responsibilities, and the landlady seems to fall into this category. The only thing I would be "asking" is when she can arrange for installation.
But as always - it's your choice.
Not with you on the cod and chips either, I'm afraid, as I hate fish - the taste, the smell, the look of them. Have just finished a pack of dates though, and started a box of After Eight Mints which I found "hidden" in bottom of wardrobe. I have to hide "goodies" from DD as she will just eat them in one sitting, but they were meant to come out at Christmas.0 -
AC, there are times I think you are beyond redemption! Just tell her to sort it and pay for it herself, fgs! :wall:
P.S. I still like you0 -
I still like you too AC - just not fish or cheeky landladies.
New book group books just arrived from Ama*on so I know what I shall be doing later.0 -
I love you all
Too late , I sent text . Whatever happens , I'm covered .
There are many ways to look at it. She is keeping an eye on a flat opposite for example . I'm sure my name has been and will be mentioned to others in the blocks . When I first met her, a chap that lives opposite turned up .
He seemed ok. He sent a fried request on Facebook . I haven't responded yet, as I only do Facebook about twice a year .
Let's see what she says in the meantime ..0
