Haven't been on there with this issue as I suspect it will be beyond me:o.

Right, it's an AEG and has done donkey's years of loyal service............

What's wrong with it? What isn't? There's been a water leak from underneath for a while and it's getting worse. Can't get machine out to investigate. The temp gauge thingy is a bit iffy. I sometimes have it on a 60 degree wash but the water stays lukewarm. The latest thing was that the drum will not rotate at all, just a grating sound as if it's trying to get revved up but nothing happens. At least the 'pump out' feature worked (didn't need any drum rotation) so I could get the water out and open the door to retrieve my washing.

    Any ideas?

In this instance Old is good ! - you don't have stupid error codes which you need a book to understand.

Ok the cheapest "leak from underneath" is a leaky pump - they're not repairable - but should be able to get one under a tenner ?

Another possibility as Aesop says is bearings, but you would not have been able to hear yourself speak in the same room as the machine on spin - was it horrendously noisy ?

On spin, can you hear the motor spinning ?

Drum not turning can be a motor fault (usually it needs brushes) - the motor will not spin - or it can be the belt come off or snapped.

Have to say - my first guess would be bearings - If it was noisy - they're actually fairly easy to do and only cost between £5 - 10 - but getting the old ones out if they've broken up in there is not easy (I use a compressor and air chisecl set ! - but it IS possible using an extension bar out of a socket set ground to have a sharp edge ! or a nice fine cold chisel)

Anyway first things first - a) Was it noisy ? b) put your hand inside the drum and rotate it backareds and forwards - if teh bearings are sound - it will be very smooth and free rotatoing. If they're shot, you will be able to feel up and down motion in the drum if you try to lift it. It will probably feel "gritty" in motion and if it is completely shot it will feel as though it really is hardly connected at all.

The third "leak potential" is the door seal - the grey rubber which joins the inside of the door to the drum housing.

The temperature thing is probably the 60 degree thermostat gone intermittent short circuit. It may need replacing, or it may come back with a good clean and the connections tightening.
  • Cannot declare anything just yet, but filled out my time sheet this evening for 4 hours over time I worked last week and listed 3 items on eb*y (1 has a bid already!), so heading in the right direction I think.

I really feel for those having washing machine issues, last time ours broke it took weeks for them to replace the drum! Hopefully everything is sorted out soon!

What was the fault the "Gasman" couldn't find Aesop ? - I'm not that good on dishwashers rylee - but they're quite similar to w/ms in principle - do you want to describe your fault ? or have you got the Gasman coming to see it too ?

Seem to have sold around £50 net this evening - not a bad day then !
  • Still nothing to declare here but have managed to bag a few bargains on the Christmas present front and also a new bed/mattress for my eldest as well as a new dishwasher which should be here tomorrow.

Hopefully now I've sorted this I can get back to making money instead of spending it :-D

the lights switch themselves on, on the washing machine. I had a day of them not doing it and it has started reocurring, had enough now. They have replaced the front panel, the main circuit board behind the front panel and the lights still switch on. The machine doesn't come on, just all the lights come on depending what cycle I have left it on. And it doesn't have any numbers. it is an old washing machine with lights showing where it is in the cycle, ie wash, rinse, spin etc.

well done on your net :) :T:j I have bids on 8 items.

but my laptop has decided to do an update that took an hour and a half instead of 20 minutes. My phone is going back to S*ny for replacement as it is still not working properly.

So my ebay listing has been put on hold while I try to get my old S*msung to work very slowly.....

All te lights on at once ? - somewhere in there is a piece of kit which decides what the machine should be deoing and sends electrickery down a wire to tell you what it is. If It's gone senile on us then that's the chip we should be looking at - except the leccy could be getting through any of the capacitors or diodes if one has faulted and just be flooding all the options at equal voltages.

That's the basic problem - nowadays all we get is "Board swappers" - when I did my training we had to locate the fault down to the individual 10p component and just change that ! - but that was on TV's and VCR's - I've always been very frustrated that you simply cannot get a circuit diagram for those silly little boards inside a w/m - so all you can do is swap triacs and big capacitors - or else swap the whole damned board at £ridiculous - A few years ago you had a turny knob with a pointer on it which showed you where you were in the cycle - The bit of junk your man should be looking for is teh chip which does what that turny knob and pointer used to do - but he has no hope unless he knows what he's doing and that means he's probably over 50 ! - and unlikely to be working for the gas board as a random "fixer" - Nay lass I fear they're going to tell you "It's life is over..." "the bit is uneconomic / obsolete ..."

WE could mend those things - given a circuit diagram - but hey - why would They let us when they can flog you a "new" washing machine ?

Thanks Procastinater, I knew you would know. :j

I've given up now. it's been happening for a year, and in 2 weeks nothing has happened to fix it. except my machine getting new unneeded parts :rotfl:

I just leave the door open so it doesn't start washing by itself.

But am glad to finally have met someone who knows what is causing it!

The washing machine is only a few years old so no chance of landlord replacing it. He won't replace the boiler until it gives up, even though parts are obsolete.

Still up, have just finished handwashing the last supposedly urgent batch of OH's stuff.

Congrats to all moneymakers, can't reply separately to each one, have been a bit preoccupied today:eek:

Procratinater, you're an absolute star, as are you as usual Aesop for all the information. Will read it more closely in the morning. Thanks a million for your time and help:A

Just a quick explanation, apart from the leak and the temp gauge thing the machine has been working OK with absolutely no unusual noise. When I used it on Saturday morning it was working normally but when I tried to do a load of washing yesterday it just refused to work at all. So, definitely no major noise. After it had taken water in the drum did not move at all, just sounded as if it was wanting to if you know what I mean. Not grating as such, just a minor kind of grinding as if it was trying to get started. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression about the noise level before. It did that click sound it does when the cycle moves on to the next thing, it did it a few times except it didn't move on and do anything at all. Dead technical me, aren't I?:o It took water in but never started to rotate. Pump out function worked so I was able to remove water so door would unlock and I could take the soggy clothes out. OH, who I said before is hopeless with electrics, says it sounds as if the motor is shot.

Cup of tea now, then bed. See you all tomorrow:)
