I would suggest using a Sainsburys Mobile sim and voipclient app. Calls should be no more than 10p per min and sms 2p :)
You have to be joking! Sainsbury's Mobile charges a whopping £7,500 per gigabyte outside the EEA, for example in South Africa. You need data to use a VOIP app.

It only uses about 3 kilobytes per calls so doesn't cost much.

It works as an operator it phones your phone then the phone you want to call.

I don't see anything 'scary' for pure calls without mobile data.

You've forgotten the fact that, as soon as you connect a smartphone to mobile data that has been deprived of an internet connection, all kinds of processes will connect and consume a lot more than 3KB.

You don't have to use a smart phone. Any phone that will run java apps will work. I used one in Portugal recently I made a phone call with the java app and it used 3kb of data costing me 1p, the call cost via dialnow was 10p for a few minutes. I think 1p was the minimum charge for data, I believe it would cost 3p at £7.50 per mb.

Actually I've just seen that Sainsbury's Mobile has some low prices for incoming calls in many countries, including for free in a handful of places such as the Channel Islands, United Arab Emirates and Andorra. It's odd given that the UAE has high termination rates for calls to its landlines and mobiles, and Sainsbury's Mobile's free incoming countries don't correlate with Toggle's free incoming countries.

It *has* to be a mistake surely, incoming call charges in Thailand 7ppm (vodafone 75ppm)?

    Good spot here, well done!

It is fairly tempting to assume they have some mistakes in there.

I'm not about to book a trip to Brazil to test it though.
