Not Ed Bott again, the guy with a degree in politics and former playboy editor; he is Redmond's PR man.

He wouldn't know a nested loop from a toilet brush.
:D Of course, because there couldn't possibly be any alternative...:D

I'd be more worried about a Tory government passing draconian snooping powers for the intelligence and police forces next week.....
That is far more sinister than anything the tech companies can come up with..
I'd rather trust my stuff to MS or Google and Apple than that untrustworthy bunch sitting in Westminster and their intelligence service lackeys.

A lot of people are reporting on the snooping features of Windows 10, and also pointing out that you can't turn all of them off and they appear to be retro-applying them to 7 & 8.
The Ed Bott thing doesn't have any substance, other than rambling on about tinfoil, calling people "just crazy", "conspiracy theorists", "bizarre", "whipped into a frenzy", and so-on, almost as if he's just discovered a thesaurus of evocative ways to dismiss an argument and has to chuck in every permutation for fear of missing one out; unfortunately, he's whipped himself into a frenzy instead. Rather than taking my word for it, you could refer to this link which questions his bonafides based on facts: http://brainout.net/frankforum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5#p478

(Some might say that an apologist for the Windows 10 snooping features might try and diminish it by referring to the UK snooping charter; however, I say feel free to start a thread about that if you like.)

I think the word is that you won't be able to install again for free, but existing installs will carry on fine.
My understanding is that once you've installed it on a PC within the 12 months you can reinstall it afterwards. But if you have a retail licence and want to move the installation to a new computer after 12 months you'll have to install the original OS.

However, there seems to be a rumour that the service pack that's getting released soon might address that.

It's all as clear as mud right now.
  • Office either for the home user or business has always been a paid for program or app

You don't always pay for it. I got it free, on my Medion Netbook.
there is not a basic word processor built into the OS (excluding notepad)

    Wordpad?

Aye, but some people seem to think there will be an ongoing subscription charge.

The OS wasn't free, it was included in the price.

Some years back there was a movement against the "Windows tax", whereby you had to pay for Windows even if you didn't want it.
