On my laptop I'm having a pop-up get Windows 10 for free, I have not clicked the link, so I am right in thinking this is a con?

I believe it is free. And no it is not a con. It has been well advertised lately.

I haven't installed it yet because I am waiting for all the problems to be ironed out first. Then I may install it. But, to be honest I am happy with Windows 7 so may just stay with that.

No. If you have Windows 7 or Windows 8[.1] you can install Windows 10 "for free" until 29 July 2016.

Personally, I would leave it until about Easter, which will give Microsoft a chance to get more of the bugs out of Windows 10...

Windows 10 is currently offered free of charge.
Do some research online to see if it's what you want.

Why think its a con ?

You can try it out and if its not for you you can go back to previous OS.

The old saying "If too good to be true then it probably is". Also with all the scams e.g. phishing emails.

I've installed it on my "spare" (no, I'm not rich. I bought a Hudl 2 :) ), and it seems OK, so far.

I'll give it a few months, before I install it on my tower system.
  • what is actually offering you the "free upgrade" , is it an email , a website or Microsoft (windows) itself?

The OP says it's a "pop-up", so I'm thinking it's the system tray nag screen.
