On my laptop I'm having a pop-up get Windows 10 for free, I have not clicked the link, so I am right in thinking this is a con?

I believe it is free. And no it is not a con. It has been well advertised lately.
I haven't installed it yet because I am waiting for all the problems to be ironed out first. Then I may install it. But, to be honest I am happy with Windows 7 so may just stay with that.*3.36 kWp solar panel system,10 x Ultima & 4 x Panasonic solar panels, Solaredge Inverter *Biomass boiler stove for cooking, hot water & heating *2000ltr Rainwater harvesting system for loo flushing *Hybrid Toyota Auris car *RIP Pingu, Hoppy, Ginger & Biscuit *Hens & Ducks* chat thread. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=52822090 -
No. If you have Windows 7 or Windows 8[.1] you can install Windows 10 "for free" until 29 July 2016.
Personally, I would leave it until about Easter, which will give Microsoft a chance to get more of the bugs out of Windows 10...0 -
Windows 10 is currently offered free of charge.
Do some research online to see if it's what you want.0 -
Why think its a con ?
You can try it out and if its not for you you can go back to previous OS.0 -

I've installed it on my "spare" (no, I'm not rich. I bought a Hudl 2), and it seems OK, so far.
I'll give it a few months, before I install it on my tower system.0 -
what is actually offering you the "free upgrade" , is it an email , a website or Microsoft (windows) itself?0

The OP says it's a "pop-up", so I'm thinking it's the system tray nag screen.0 -
