The Only Girl .... Don't worry, I know you'll put some into the EF when you can...

[Deleted User] ..... I've Updated the First Post...You are doing AMAZING!! Keep it going....
  • Nothing to report from me either I'm afraid, whilst I also didn't get involved in the black Friday splurging I did purchase a couple of pairs of gig tickets last night for me and hubby.

Not expensive, £70 for 2x 2 tickets so I feel it was a bargain :D

    Hubby will be pleased...I hope!

  • Morning LittleMissDetermined .... I know it's controversial on here sometimes but I tend to think that we should still have Treats while we are paying off Debts because some of us will be paying back Debts for YEARS....and if there are absolutely no Treats whatsoever it just gets disheartening...well it does for me anyway....

So I'm glad you bought those tickets....hope they were for someone good ;) xXx

Good Morning, Helen and everyone. I hope the sun is shining wherever you are:j

I totally agree with what you said about treats Helen:T. It's so true that some of us are on DMPs or are paying off debts in other ways which will take years, even decades:eek:. Cutting out every single thing that gives you pleasure during that long hard slog is like trying to lose weight by going on a starvation diet. I've been there, done that a few too many times to remember (the diet bit I mean):o), it just doesn't work in the long-term:(.

Hopefully we've all learned our lesson the hard way by admitting to our debt problems, coming on here, seeking help from professionals and debt charities like StepChange etc . We're developing a healthy attitude to money and have well and truly ditched the spend, spend. spend mentality where we could have absolutely anything we wanted (bung it on the plastic, it's nor as if it's real money).

By rationing ourselves to small treats now and then, as some slimming programmes let you do too, especially after doing well in other areas of our cutting down, we can only increase our motivation and enthusiasm for what can seem like endless purgatory.

This sounds a bit preachy on reading it back. Apologies if it does as it wasn't intended to be that way:o.

  • Completely agree carbootcrazy, the longer you go without a treat the larger the splurge is likely to be!

  • Also agree on the treats! We might have taken it a little too far but we had holidays - saved for, contribution from parents and paid for in cash. We both have stressful jobs and felt we "needed" them even though we could have paid the debt off much earlier if we hadn't have taken them. This strategy kept us going through another year. We couldn't do this at the beginning, but OH got pay increases and we were able to save something. I know that some people wouldn't approve but we paid off our debts in full (no final offers).

Looking back, I could have managed with spending less on holidays but OH couldn't have. He actually hated his job some of the time and it was the thought of a holiday once a year that kept him going. We had to tackle the debt as a team.
  • ok i see how this can become addictive now

banked £20 made from some extra gifts i bought through the year and didn't need so sold to a friend

she was happy with the bargains and i was happy to get my money back - win win

:j:j:j#7 mothernerd Committing £520 to emergency fund now £600/£1000. :j:j:j

Totally out of the blue, received a refund and apology from my old bank about an old personal loan. Cheque for £692.48. Keeping £50 for diy this month and DS3 has told me this week that I can buy him a pair of trainers for his Christmas present - cost currently unknown but size 13 mens are a specialist buy. He wants the same brand he has now and I am happy with that as he has had them at least three years.

Will have to pay cheque in on Monday and wait for it to go through but will not use the £520 for anything else.

I have a small 'wish list' for December. The things I am most likely to buy are another pair of jogging pants - bought two and only found out one was a medium after I had washed and worn them (thought I had put on weight, could hardly breathe) and either a cyclamen or a pot of hyacinths - usually do my own but have avoided looking at plants and seeds this year. I will put more into the emergency fund when I know the cost of the trainers.
My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.
