Shopping in New York

Hi folks,
I'm currently in NY and there is sales tax (8 and a bit %) on most stuff and was looking at buying a camera out here. Can you (like in other countries) get the tax back at the airport?
Thanks for any help0 -
Be careful.
Even if you DO manage to get the tax back - anything over £145 you are suppose to declare at customs and pay duty on it!0 -

If you bring goods back to the UK from a Non-EEC country that have a value in excess of £145, then you will have to pay duty on the whole of the value, not just the value that is in excess of £1450 -
I know about having to declare/pay tax but am still unsure as to wether I can claim the tax paid in NY back - anyone know?0

you can't claim back any NY state tax...
however, whatever camera you choose, you'll normally find out that it is cheaper with tax, when compared to UK price (with VAT)0 -

But - UK Customs Duty and VAT on the Customs Duty gets added to the US price including Sales Tax, so you have to pay 3 lots of tax when you declare it on coming back to the UK...0 -
If you remove the camera from its box they'll have no quick way to tell whether you bought it in the US or from the UK before the trip.0

Maceys do a discount card for tourists (show proof like passport and ticket) that you pick up in store-I think it's 8 or 9%) and is extra to any other in-store discounts.
Also Virgin have a flight sale to NY for the winter on sale til 30 August.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -

HMRC can check your credit card bills, receipts you carry etc or ask you questions at the port of entry. Or are you suggesting that we should all evade VAT and customs duties to save money?0 -
I went to India in January and did lots of shopping way over my baggage allowance so i was told by some store owners to simply ship my items back home to London. After looking into this i ended up shipping a large box of items back costing me about £30 which i thought was nothing.
I am now going to New York in September with my girlfriend and know i will shop more than the allowed 20kg baggage allowance. Does anyone know if its worth me shipping over a parcel from New York to London and what the charges would roughly be or just pay the excess baggage charge of £6 per kg?
Finally i keep hearing about these outlets in New York, Where are the good ones?
Thanks!!0
