Which shops did you go in?

Did you get a Macy's 11% tourist discount card?

What $ to £ exchange rate did you get.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.

Factory outlets... what is the obsession with these... clothes are notoriously cheaper in NYC, at normal prices, let alone the hassle of getting to a outlet mall.. (in other words there are none in NYC)

What to do? - wrap up warm, it can be bitterly cold with the winds, so make sure you have something warm to wear when wandering around..

do walk around, it is great fun!
Top of the Rock, and take some photos of the rockerfeller center christmas tree...

i'm unsure about shows, but check out ticketmaster.com and if you want cheaper tickets, be prepared to queue at TKTS at times square, or do what any sensible person does and go to the TKTS booth at south street seaport, as there is less of a queue down at that location. remember, they sell day of performance tickets only (though Seaport location, will sell NEXT DAY MATINEE TICKETS.. aka wed aft on a tues, etc etc etc)

    phew! thats enough for now

Belfastbelle- Markymoo is a guy so would not probabaly be as interested in shopping outlets as we females! Woodbury Common is a huge shopping outlet in upsate NY so you need to get a bus from the Port Authority, and it costs a bit for the ticket, but it's about an hours journey. You will see this place has mixed reviews on MSE, but my daughter and I really thought it was worth while. I bought quite a lot of Ralph Lauren bedding which in the RL shops in NY was very much more expensive. The Nautica shop for both men and women was excellent too. There are so many good quality branded shops there, and this will be our first point of call when we go back next April before hitting the NY city shops. Also I agree with what Markymoo said about Southstreet Seaport and the TKTS booth, much better than Times Square. You will also find one of the best Abercrombie and Fitch stores there, and a Victorias Secret, plus it's quite a nice place to look around too.

I thought the whole point about New York was that it was expensive.

If you wanted bargain shopping, all you needed to do was cross the river to New Jersey (where the sales tax is much lower). But then you would have missed out on the millionaire experience.
  • as i have said before it depends on what time of year you visit the States as to the bargains you can buy. it sometimes can depend even down to the week ....the end of summer clothing sales start in earnest on labor day (1st monday in september ) ..good bargains to be had then, but over the next couple of weeks a lot of the department stores really crank the prices down. anyone familiar with tj maxx and marshalls would find that they start reductions on the reductions and keep going in this period.
i've been to woodbury common many times at different times of the year and it really can affect what you buy there.
another good day for bargains is the day after thanksgiving day (thanksgiving is the 4th thursday in november) commonly called black friday ...this is a day for bargains particularly presents for christmas ...toys , dvd's , electrical items ...but still good for clothing , household etc
the stores open early and the queues to pay are mind boggling ...in some of the toy stores people get given great big clear bin liners and drag them to the tills full of toys .
i think woodbury common opens at midnight for the black friday sales
    enjoy

OI!!! i go to NYC to go shopping as well.. (just the beer drinking and phototaking takes priority!) i just don't see the point in spending $15 to go somewhere and back to get about a $20 saving..

ok.. i'm normally there when the sales are on, but when compared to the UK, my clothes are hell of a lot cheaper regardless...

My point is, if you don't know what you're going for, you could waste time and money going...

Sorry to go off thread.. Marky you've just reminded me about Brooklyn beer, I nearly drank a little too much of this stuff one afternoon in Flanelli's. Also enjoyed the really dark beer in the Heartland brewery down Southstreet Seaport.. can't remember the name of it though, wasn't Pumpkin, any ideas?

Back on topic, best shopping bargains I had were from Stussy, Adidas and Replay down Soho.

i always have an 11% discount card.. it comes in useful!!!!

one persons bargain, is another persons rip off.. so its hard to define exactly what people mean..

for me a bargain is finding something in my size (i'm an odd size, and find it difficult to get jeans in the UK that fit me!)
  • I saw on the tv just before xmas last year that Maceys had a one day 50% off everything sale and wondered if someone could confirm this and if they know if the same could happen again this year. Im asking as I am off to the big apple 5th -12th December and this would be excellent for xmas shopping.
