  • Hi All!

I'm going to NY on Sunday and have about £2500 to take with me. I'm not sure whether I should get the money exchanged here (say order the currency from Travelex before i get to the airport) or use my Nationwide card to spend and withdraw when I get there?

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks

i was warned about using a debit card last year by a friend who lives there, very easy to get your card cloned (no different to a lot of other places really) that said i went through about 2k without a problem, this time though i am taking a credit card and $1000 in cash and will pay the bill when i get back, just for security.

Which shops did you go in?

Did you get a Macy's 11% tourist discount card?

What $ to £ exchange rate did you get.
WE ARE OFF TO LAX SOON CAN WE GET THESE DISCOUNT CARDS FOR SOMEWHERE IN CALI?

Nationwide credit card and Nationwide flex account card- 2 best bits of plastic for travelling anywhere abroad with IMHO, just need a few dollars on you for when you get there but cash machines all over the place. I treated myself to a lovely diamond bracelet last visit and couldn't have done it without my cc. It helps spur of the moment buys and takes the worry out of running out of cash as long as you keep an eye on what you are spending. Of course there is the huge bill to contend with when you get back but I am sure a balance transfer would take care of that!

Get yourself a few dollars for transport costs into the City. Personally, I wouldn't risk carrying £2500 - its a large amount of money in anyones terms. Take your Nationwide Card (Flex account), Get the Bankers rate everytime - not the tourist rate and withdraw as and when you want. Sally

Back from NYC today. On reading the Macy's discount card I believe it is valid in over 500 different stores. Just walk in and ask for one.

  • I cant believ how little Century 21 has been mentioned on here.

Its opposite ground zero and its brilliant! I've been to NY twice and spent hours and hundreds of dollars in there on great quality clothes.

Tax or no tax betwen us we got shoes, shirts ties suits for work, decent jeans socks underwear etc... wasnt so good for kids clothes unless you want your kids dressed like a mid 90s rapper.

Also Filenes basement in union square. got a ralp lauren suit, new nike golf shoes.

also watch out for Kenneth cole. not so popular over here but if you can get stuff in the sales its v trendy and decent value.

also Old navy, perfect for t shirts underwear shoes and kids stuff. v cheap part of the gap group but real bargain basement stuff. I am taking literally the clothes I travel in and straight into Old navy for new underwear

my wife wont agree but if you go in the baseball season its worth going to see a game. yes it was tedious in parts but beer, nice summer evenings and an entertaining crowd (if a little naive compared to our football crowds) mad it a life experience to tick off the list

off tomorrow, first time in winter! seems to be reasonably warm at the moment for late nov.

i know what you're on about thamesmatt... i've tried mentioning to people there are enough bargains in NYC without having to go to the outlet malls, but no one believes me..

i've bought coats & jeans in century 21, picked up bargains such as designer jeans for as little as $30..

normally the price on the ticket isn't what you end up paying, its normally less!!!!

    I do :T :D
Same old same old since 2008

  • Came home from NY today - Went to Macys last Sunday but was not terribly impressed with the sale prices.
Managed to spend a bit there but most of the good bargains must have been bagged on the Friday and Saturday of the Thanksgiving holiday.
