Just wondered if anyone could help me with a few questions, been reading to much on net and have confused myself (not hard), we are going to NYC in 2 wks for 5 days, staying at Grand Union Hotel (is this ok) would like to buy just a few things, uggs ladies, North Face Gillet mens, gap kids and abercrombie & Fitch. Any advice please, please
There's a huge Abercrombie store on 5th Avenue (up somewhere near 57th street I think). Be prepared to queue to get in. Fab store to shop in if you are young and thin and like loud music. Gorgeous half naked men on the door....!!
If you want to get cheap Uggs head out by bus to Woodbury Common. This is a huge retail outlet center about 45 mins - 1 hour north of Manhattan. There are lots of designer brands (Timberland, Gap, North Face, DKNY, Polo Ralph Lauren, Skechers, Gucci and Levi's - plus tons more). The clothes are already discounted but also the sales tax is cheaper than in New York City.
You can get a bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd street. I did this in November. The bus terminal is huge and a little scary, but there is an info desk and they will point you in the right direction for the gate number. Tix can be bought from Grayline or from Shortline, either in advance or in the bus terminal (although tix can also be bought on the street outside by Grayline staff - that's where I got mine). Take a wheelie suitcase with you as you will fill it up easily!! You'll need a whole day and there are plenty of buses - running half hourly I think in the morning and evening.
Or you could shop in Macy's and Bloomingdales and get 11% off with thier visitor discount cards. Just take your passport to guest services on arrival at the store to obtain your discount card.
Good luck and happy shopping!0 -
Thank you so much for info, back on top of things again, just think I had a moment of Oh my GOD, so excited, any more advice on anything would be fab.0

I got my uggs from woodbury common. Personally i wouldnt go back there again- i wouldnt say it was a waste of my day but everything i got i could of got in the city. I would not recommend it to be honest if.... your into abercrombie & uggs etc ( thats all i bought when i bought there lol) however if you like Chanel, Gucci & Dior then yes u can save money on the designer brands however they are expensive to begin with they are discounted but are not giving them away by no means. The other stores, dkny & l'occintine not really any cheaper than in the city.
My uggs (this season) were $180 in woodbury common. They were $220 in the city however the coach fair to woodbury common is $40 so on that item alone ive not saved anymoney.
Head for Bloomingdales or Ugg store for your uggs. Theres a list of the stores on there website. The one in soho is lovely if your in that area.
Ohh and enjoy abercrombie it was one of the highlights of my holiday haha.
If you need anymore info let me know sounds like we have a similar taste in brandsNew York ♥..........These street will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you.

Oh i must say though they had a Dior bag for around $300 in Woodbury common which is cheap for Dior however i got lovely leather one from Centry21, but again if your into designer brand ( and can afford them) maybe go if not, i would pass.
I recommend Centry21 by ground zero ( but go early in morning starts to get v.busy in afternoon) and Filene's Basement theres one in union square- much smaller than centry21 so can have a good look for a bargain !!New York ♥..........These street will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you.

Thanks for the advice, I would love to be into Dior etc. but just not practical for a mum of two little ones, uggs, north face and Abercrombie all the way for me and hubby, this is our first trip to NYC its kind of our honeymoon even though we got married 3 years ago (we couldn't afford one then). I am so excited but abit worried that we wont use our short time wisely when we have spend ages saving for this. So I am doing loads of research and asking for loads of advice, so as we seem to be into the same things anything you can tell me I would be really grateful, Thanks again Cathy0

Since this is a shopping thread: I will be in New york in early August (from the 1st onwards). Will there still be a summer sale? Last year I was able to shop in LV in Macys with sale prices but a few days later in LA, the sale was over. I don't know about the rest of the shops, but I really loved Macys for the convenience of a one-stop shop for my favourite brands.

I was in NYC a few years ago and there were end of season sales at the end of July.
Do you have some favourite stores, other than Macy's? I like Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, Gap, American Eagle, Esprit and Old Navy. What I've done is sign up for their newsletters and they often send discount vouchers as well as notifiction about sales, as I go every year. There may also be a Macy's newletter. You can always unsubscribe after your visit.0 -
im going on the 25th of march, do they have any sales on then?? Thanks0

Hi Guys,
I'm off to NY with a friend at the end of the month. She won flights with work and very kindly offered to take me. The plan was to stay with a friend there but circumstances have changed so now we've got to stay in a hotel... this mean, sadly, that the budget is TIGHT!
However, we've both done all the sights so really I'm looking for some off the beaten track shops- thrift preferably!
We're staying in the best western by chinatown and personally I've never spent much time 'downtown' as it were. The odd afternoon, a trip to WTC/GZ, Staten Island and that's pretty much it so am keen to explore.
Any suggestions on the best place to find some decent thrift shops would be much appreciated- along with cheap bars and restaurants (will be checking out other threads for this too!)
Thanks guys!

macy's dont sell Uggs - Bloomingdales do.
Dont go shopping on a Monday - we did in October and quite a few shops were low on stock after the weekend.
Century 21 is a must.
Woodbury Common is a waste of effort.
Abercrombi store at Seaport much better - but dont bother if you take XL in UK sizes , as I tried about 15 things on and none of them fitted me.0
