I have flown with Virgin, BA and AA to NYC in the past 2 years and seeing as OH is 6'2 and I am 5'9 we certainly noticed the difference with particular airlines in terms of pitch.
BA were by far the largest with both of us having at least 2 clear inches between knee and seatback, Virgin both of us had to sit legs akimbo to avoid impaling the poor sods in front and AA was somewhere in between but the seats were wider. Virgin also felt much narrower compared to the other 2. Also liked the footrest on BA.
I am not going by what people write in terms of dimensions online I am going by what we actually experienced on the flight in different seat locations.

Must admit I was worried about BA after reading some dreadful reveiws online but they were fabulous. The only thing I wasn't happy with is only being able to choose seats 24 hours before you fly.

My friend who has regularly flown from NYC to London for the past 15 years said never ever to use Delta as in his words 'everything sucks' about them but I have other friends who said it was fine, but they are less than 5 feet tall so I guess its all about your personal needs.

mrseyes.. but flights to NYC will go down in price about 3 months before you holiday, you should be able to pick up flights for around £300 at the most, anything over that isn't moneysaving...

  • markymoo, I've been waiting for the prices to go down and am now within the 3 month rule but the prices have gone up by £30! Should I still wait or book asap? Travelling MAN-NYC, dates are flexible (been looking at 14-21, 21-28 as assuming mid week travel is cheaper?) but want to stay there for a week. Any other advice, ie what websites should I be checking? Thanks!

the 3 month rule isn't set in stone.. i booked my March holiday in January (less than 2 months away) and previously, booked around 6 weeks in advance...

personally, i'd keep looking... and do i really have to give away my secrets to booking cheap flights?!

i check expedia, but you gotta know how to use it cleverly... sometimes by changing the airline, from all, to a specific one, a cheaper price comes up... i've had this happen with Continental and US Airways at times...
    (current prices are around £380)

also, checking the airlines own website, sometimes will make it cheaper, at least by £10.

Now looking at the delta flight that is available, the delta website is £10 cheaper (because expedia take a £10 fee!), but i see that it is in U Class - this is a cheaper fare than a standard Y (both of which is economy) but not as cheap as T, which is probably the cheapest class around for Delta..

sometimes sliding a day forwards and backwards will bring up drastically different prices, this is where travelocity comes in, as they do a grid system of 3 days either side of the dates you want to travel..

and finally, kayak, this just searches loads of websites, and you get to see some other deals the previous two websites might not show.. however, be wary of the cheaptickets.com fares, which can be cheaper, but they are US$ charged, as the company is in the US, and i've heard not many good reviews about them...

by doing these 3 searches, i've found that (currently) the prices range from £380 on expedia, to £340 on travelocity (ok, its different days, but its still cheaper) and £341 with KLM directly...

for me, my 3 month rule works, but i don't want people to blame me, if they miss a flight price they are happy to pay. i would encourage people to wait til it drops below £300 for a flight, because these type of prices do crop up a lot of the time..

obviously, the time of the year you go will dictate the cheapest price, Jan - March are ususally cheap, as is July - Aug..

April, May, Sept, Oct, Nov, and Dec are normally the more expensive months to go to NYC...

So, i hope this insight into how i book my cheapish flights helps some people get their flight at the price they are happy with...

to be brutally honest., if those are the dates you're looking at, they are only just 3 months away, so i'd hold fire and see if there is anything better.. .

£372 is pricey IMO, even from ABZ, i'd consider flying from Edinburgh or Glasgow, if you could get something cheaper..

also, i'm not a fan of flying into AMS to go to NYC, it just seems backward to me!!

and as for my signature, it applies from the major airports. If i were to fly from the airport nearest to me, i think £400 would be a good price. But it isn't. You have to weigh up the pros and cons of different airports throughout the UK, and work out what is best for you.. If you want to pay £380 for a flight to NYC, then do it, don't believe my little guide. That is all it is, a guide, its not set in stone, its just there to help!
  • Hi Travelling to NYC from LGW on 1 may to 5th may - best flight so far £370 continental - shall I hang on? or will price go up?
