While we all wait for markymoo's guide to Tribeca, I just thought you'd all like to know that the Big Apple Greeter website has brief guides to various areas, including Tribeca, which are just a bit 'different' to anything I've seen in the printed guidebooks.
Sadly they can't supply a greeter for us, but I suppose summer time is always very busy!
bigfoot125, I've just googled 'walks around new york city' and several promising sites have appeared. However, I suggest your best bet is to borrow a guidebook from the library or look up a few websites and work out what YOU would like to see. If you do that, it will be much easier to group them. Indeed, some of the guidebooks I've been given offer such 'groupings'.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Central Park
Rockerfeller Centre
Times Square
Flat Iron Building
Chrysler Building
MET
Macys
Fifth Avenue - loads of shops
42nd Street
Do try and make sure you have an amble around the following 4 districts, if you want a feel of 'real' New York and its less touristy.
Greenwich Village
Little Italy
China Town
Soho
Wall Street
World Trade Centre
Statue of Liberty
For Broadway shows, there is a TKTS Booth at South Street, Seaport, near Battery Park, near the Staten Island Ferry, less queues than the tickets booth at Times Square. Get the Staten Island Ferry (free), it goes past Statue of Liberty and back again, so you can take all your pics.
I have listed Macys above but not really a shopper when I go, too much to see and do!But do have a read of this thread, loads of shopping and other tips. I love NY stuff is everywhere, especially Times Square. I do buy jeans there as Levis are about £20.
View is better from the top of the Rockerfeller rather than the Empire State Building, its less busy and you get to see the Empire State Building too!:D

Can anyone beat this quote?
Departing Manchester 2/9/08 for 1 week (so we return early morning on the 10/9/08.) 3 Adults flying with Continental = £342 per person.
We are able to travel 2 days either side of 2nd September, so if anyone can find a cheaper quote with another airline that would be great.0 -

Hello there is so muchb to read on this post. I am planning a weeks trip to new york in november. I dont have a clue where to start who to fly with where to stay etc.. Would it be really christmass and snowy at that time? I really want to start organsing it but i dont know what to do can any one help me? It would be mine and my fiances first trip abroad.

I was there 9-11 Nov last year and only a few Christmas decorations were up. I think they were up in Macy's. The Xmas tree at the Rockerfeller was up but not lit but the trees around the ice rink there were all lit up with fairy lights. I think you'd need to travel late Nov (after Thanksgiving) to see it more Christmassy. It will be very cold so be prepared.0 -
Quick question - I was thinking of booking a direct flight from Scotland with either Delta or Continental. When booking, do you get the option to book your seats, or do you have to wait closer to the time to book them when you check-in or worse still when you get to the airport?? I've gone through both sites as far as I can without putting in CC details, but don't see any options to pick seats.
Also, using Kayak throws up some cheaper options to go via Amsterdam (both flights KLM). However some of the connections are very close (around an hour). Why would they offer this, as surely that's too close a time to get through security and the like....I presume if I bought these flights and I missed a connection, it'd be my fault for booking flights too close together???? Or if both flights are with the same company, would they be more sympathetic to moving you onto the next flight?
TIA

if an airline offers you flights, with a connection, you are purchasing a ticket which is from you origin to your destination. Unlike some airlines which operate on a Point to Point basis (easyjet, ryanair, bmibaby), airlines like Continental, US Airways, KLM, etc etc etc, operate as a full service carrier..
now.. i've never flown fly Schipol airport, so i have no idea, but an hour connection in an EU airport should be enough.. you land, walk off the plane, no security to get through as you're connecting, get thru to the next gate, and get on the plane.. yes it is tight, but doable...
just my opinion

I did the Amsterdam connection from Edinburgh in April and had such an amazing time I am doing it again in October there is no security or bags to worry about so like markymoo says you just have to go to the gate. Not too concerned about the connection times as if the first flight was late they would need to rebook us as all on one through ticket.
- flights were around the £280 mark both times. I used kayak to come up with the best dates/prices and then booked flght and hotel through expedia.0
