    Asus EEE PC 900 20GB £320
I want one of those too - I saw a friend using one and was immediately VERY jealous!

But if I don't buy anything else * and it IS cheaper there than here, that might come in under my allowance, mightn't it, Mr Bear?

    * I know the chances of me not wanting to buy anything else is a bit on the low side, but I've got four chaps with me who probably won't be tempted by the clothes, even though they need them! So DH may have to buy the Asus, which will look more plausible than him stocking up on women's clothing! :rotfl:

This does lead to another question for Mr Bear, when you are travelling in a party, and possibly sharing suitcases, does that lead to problems at Customs? Because I know we're likely to bring back more than we take, but if we come back with a suitcase each there is no way everyone and everything will fit in the car!

Phatbear: getting rid of packaging = make out it's been used and therefore hopefully no customs payment.

Randomtask: any idea of the Asus EEE name in the US, or should I just google it?

    Thanks!

Ahhh I see, silly me about the packaging.

Anyway just a quick point attempting to evade the appropriate VAT and duty on items is an offence and as such is frowned upon by people like me and the people who pay me to stop people like you being silly.

Of course the potentiol of you geting caught is very low, despite "doing" the JFK flight is one of my personal faves, however the potential of you getting caught for speeding or shop lifting is also very low so why not give that a go too, after all the law is the law.

I cant go into specific details but a chap i recently pounced on fell foul of the afore mentioned law when he decided to make an illegal declaration, of course the packaging wasnt with the items he had bought but us customs chaps are quite clever and we have our ways about us, anyway the end result was the seizure of everything he had bought and all of his baggage and contents of his baggage, as they were packed with the "offending" items, to say he was'nt best pleased would be an understatment but what the heck you break the law then you deserve everything you get.

Another issue to consider is warranty, the vast majority of electrical items do not come with international warranties so if you purchased something and it went pop you would end up with nothing.

Just my thoughts, i look forward to seeing you in the red channel.

    all the best

Your allowance from a non-eu state is £145, so its nowhere near the £320.

Of course there is no probs sharing cases, however its really important that everyone who has something in that case stays with it and makes the correct declrartion, after all if you did get stopped using the excuse that the items belong to someone else wont wash.

Thank you, I remember reading another post where £290 was mentioned but presumably that was just doubling it for two people, or maybe it was a future plan, or maybe it was something else entirely.

I still WANT one of those Asus EEE things, but I may be persuaded to resist. The warranty thing is always something which has bothered me too, so it will be easier to resist ...

Do you do Gatwick? If you do, I may tell you when to look out for a very stressed lady, probably wearing pink, with three 'lads' towering over her and her DH! :rotfl: Or maybe you don't say where you work, which would be fairy nuff given your occupation!

Thanks phatbear, I appreciate the warning.
As a good citizen (and one who ALWAYS gets caught when doing something wrong, eg bunking off school back in the day) I will behave myself ;)
So any item over £145 means I have to go down the red channel?

£145 is your personal allowance, this cant be doubled up if you are a couple ie shared allowance, also please note that if you spend over £145 then the vat and duty will be payable on the full amount not the amount over the £145.

If you spend over and above this amount then you need to present yourself to a customs officer, either in the red channel or at the top of the channels, you will prbably be suprised at the officers attitude as despite our sometimes gruff outer persona we are usually quite nice people, and who knows you may even run into one of the common sense officers, which i lump myself with, and you will be dealt with accordingly.

We will try and always take the common sense approach and honesty is always the best policy, but taking the rise isnt always the best idea remember we have rubber gloves and we are not afraid to use them.

    let me just ask..

say i buy 3 pairs of jeans... 1 pair is worth £100, the second £45, and the third, £30..

so i get charged vat and duty on..

    a) all 3 pairs,
    b) the highest value pair
    c) the lowest value pair

i.e, i still get my allowance, and only pay on the items that go over my allowance?

You pay the vat and duty on £175, as soon as you go over the £145 you need to pay the vat and duty on everything, in reality the officer would probably issue you a notice 1, customs leaflet, and get you on your merry way.

Sorry, misinformation on my part. The Asus EEE range doesn't have a different name in the US. I was thinking elsewhere.

FYI, the N95 8GB unlocked is on J&R's website at $649 so I'd expect a similar price in store. That's roughly £350.

If you really need an asus eee, toysrus have the best price around right now for the 20gb model (my mate just bought one for his folks) not a lot more expensive than the US and also solves your warranty concerns...

    £299

    also available in white :)
