Hi, I'm going to NY in 3 weeks time and want to find out about import duty. I am planning on buying a kids bike and shipping it back to the UK but obviously I need to find out how much it will cost me in total before I go for it. Could anyone point me in the right direction please?
    Thanks!

the bear will know more... but in the meantime, check out the customs website! http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/

Off the top of my head im not sure what the duty will be, however im back at work at 7am tommorow so I can look it up in the tarrif for you, remember not only will you ned to pay vat on the item but also on the carriage of the item plus an entry fee, which can be high.

Anyway I'll have an answer for you tommorow morning.

    all the best

Thanks for the above answers. I did look on the customs website but couldn't really find an answer.
I also need to find out how to actually post it as I suspect the normal post office will not take it as it will be so big.

i'm sure the USPS will send things, however, you may find it cheaper to send it FedEx or UPS... there are many FedEx stores in NYC, so you just make sure it is wrapped ready to send, and go there, and they'll sort it out etc...

New York only 5 days away (woo!), just wondering what shows would you recommend?

And also if the TKTS booths open at 3pm what time would you recommend start queuing at?

    Cheers

The duty on bikes is 14% dont forget you will need to add vat to the item and the value of duty.

Gawd its early and im sure theres more to life than working on a sunday but it pays the bills i guess.

WILS.. you don't queue at the TKTS booth.. you go to the one at south street seaport, where the queue is a lot shorter..

i can't help on what broadway shows to go and see, as it isn't my thing.. i do music concerts, and get drunk and jump around like a lunatic... thats my thing!

I will be after seeing a Broadway show too. Also went on the net and there is a free open air concert in Central Park when I go and Duran Duran are playing. :D

    Hotel Advice.

There is a group of us looking to go to New York end of November this year for 5 nights. We are hoping to stay somewhere near to Times Square. However we have never been before so would be very grateful for any hotel recommendations anyone may have.

    Thanks in advance
