there is the cheap airlines thread, but a best airline? the best airline is the one you can afford. they are much of a muchness to be honest.. unless you're contemplating going business class, then BA will have a much higher level of service than the US carriers..

I've flown US Airways, via PHL a number of times, their service isn't probably as good as Delta, within the cabin crew, but the plane A330, is great, as you get at seat power for your laptop throughout economy, and also, you get at seat video....

Yea I used US Airways last year to Vegas, and i agree they were pretty good. Only paid £330 return as well. New York should be a lot cheaper!!

Off to NY on 30 May for 3 days. Staying at Washington Square Hotel in Greenwich Village.

For spending money, how much dollars and how much in travellers cheques do you suggest, as in percentage? I know I need a lot of dollars on me for tipping, but how much does it cost to change up travellers cheques there. Last time I went was 8 years ago, and I can't remember what I did. :o

A great restaurant I would recommend for lunch or evening meal is Blue Smoke. Its a BBQ restaurant with a great menu in my opinion. Good atmosphere, good bar and was busy when I went in December time. Also very reasonable prices. 27th Street. www.bluesmoke.com It shouldn't let you down

    Mr Bear,

I agree with redwoodysoups recommendation of Blue Smoke, however, there is a better BBQ / Ribs Restaurant in the East Village called Mara's Homemade.. great for an evening meal, and really really cheap too..

as for small deli's for places for breakfast and lunch, just wander the streets to find them.. the busy ones full of locals are the best to go to.. only start queuing (sorry, only join the line) when you know what you want, as not to annoy other patrons, and order quickly, concisely, and clearly.. it makes life easier..

breakfast, you should be able to pick up for less than $4 (bagel, bacon and egg roll, and a coffee) less if you eat less...

lunch, most deli's have loads of salads, noodles, ribs, chicken out, grab a tray, and fill it up, doesn't matter what you choose, as it is just done by weight, and they'll weigh it at the end... about $10 will feed you, and you probably won't want an evening meal!!!!!!
they also have soups, but this time of year, it will probably be good weather, and you might not want that, but again, they are really good quality!

    hmm

    other restaurant recommendations include
    Tribeca Grill
    Keens Steakhouse (awesome lobster!)

    anything else?

oh.. any room for me in your suitcase?

Thanks for the info, alas due to having an already bulging sack, full of squirell skin g strings, dubloons and ninja outfit with shuriken dvds, there is'nt room for much else in my bag, and to tell ya the truth I dont think Mrs Phatbear would appreciate you being there.

Had some wicked pancakes, a personal favourite of mine, down by century 21 so thats a must do, tried virgils last time which was top banana and someone did mention blue smoke too, im all for wandering the streets and seeing what pops up but mrs phatbear insists on being a tad more organised. Roll on wednesday week, now does anyone know when it would best to get some dollars and how do i get an upgrade on everything for free, ho ho.

    all the best

damn the dubloons... and a ninja outfit? interesting...

as for being organised.. the only problem with corner delis are that they don't advertise, so it is difficult to find them until you get there..

however, the benefit of corner delis is that they are on nearly every corner!

woohoo... 900 posts, and it even mentioned dubloons! :D

Dammit the prices have jumped up £40 overnight from Man - NYC 30/10 - 7/11. Now cheapest I can find are £345.

Dates are +/- a few days, anyone find cheaper??

can't find that US Airways fare any cheaper.... £345 it is right now...
bear in mind that Oct is 5 months away, and prices can fluctuate quite a lot in between now and then...

I'd hang fire, but keep checking, in about 6 weeks to 2 months you might find you have cheaper fares available...
