Pooky23... most places, when you hand over your card.. they swipe, and hand it straight back, without checking a signature...

some places, you'll swipe the card thru a terminal yourself, and sign the plastic screen....

  • Just reading through all the pages! Am on page 29 and into my 2nd day of reading, phew! Just to say thankyou to everyone posting great tips on here. Am off in January with my other half, he has been a few times but about 6yrs ago so im just updating on various things as it will be my first trip. Got flights from Manchester to JFK for 284 which was the cheapest I could find for that time. Took onboard everyone's advice that I have been reading. Compiling a list of hotels from this thread aswell!

I am keen to hunt down some good vintage shops if anyone knows of any? Particularly 20's/30's/40's/50's stuff.

    Thanks!

:rotfl: Can I just say that unless you're sure you'll be able to search the thread for particular words, it's worth cutting and pasting the 'best' posts somewhere, to save having to read it all again ...

I had several threads saved to my Google Notebook during the planning process, but I also copied various posts about what was around the Cosmopolitan Hotel and anything else I knew we would want to do, then printed it all off when we went.

Means you can skip over all the questions and concentrate on the answers ...

Have a look on nymag.com - you can search for stores based on type of store. But there are loads and loads of vintage stores in NYC - especially in the East Village.
  • Thanks so much! Am on page 64!!! For anyone coming onto this post for the first time, do try and read as much as you can as you wouldnt believe the amount of times ive seen posts asking for cheap flights and hotel recommendations! Ive not got a huge long list of stuff and impressed the other half, he has been twice and I got stuff he didnt even know about! Got a list of hotels so going to hunt around on hotelconexions (sp) for bargains but swayed by the cosmo as would be nice to stay in that area will be stalking broadway.com, entertainment.com etc for bargains. Also picked up somewhere in the threads about a flea market on 7th Ave on a Sunday so will see if thats still on.
Sue, have been writing page numbers down with useful info aswell as bookmarking them.
Not going till January but want to go now, I know im going to love it!
I am performing also at the slipper Room on the 18th Jan so if anyone likes a bit of burlesque, cabaret, bawdy camp entertainment come down, its the real New York!
  • Becco in New York is a wonderful restaurant, we had many good meals, they do a great pre theatre offer as well as a standard menu. Their 3 pastas selection are very good, can have a high quality cheap meal, or push the boat and have one of the best meals in New York! I've been going to New York for 7 years now and always pop into Becco once or twice.

  • o great new york moneysaving experts! help me! :D

i'm currently looking at flights for the 31/08/09 - 10/09/09 (or any dates close to these) direct from birmingham to nyc. the best i can find at the moment is £396 with continental.

is this a good price? are they likely to drop any further? or should i just book them so i can stop obsessively checking flight prices twice a day? :D

I am looking for a hotel in New York for 7th & 8th November.

I have found Hotel Edison for $438 for the 2 nights. Could I get a better hotel for around the same price? Have read mixed reports about it - has anyone stayed in it.

    Any help appreciated.

there is a guide to booking an NYC holiday, link on page one of this thread, and i totally disagree with the whole, book it straight away, you're looking nearly 12 months away... airlines can discount flights, and £396 is a little on the higher side, could easily get it down to around £325 from my reckoning, but obviously, i don't know anything...
