for cheap/free gigs you could always check out arlene grocery which is down in the east village...
mercury lounge is also really good for small gigs.... there is always plenty going on, so as i said previously, check out https://www.pollstar.com and make your choices from the gig listings there..
also, when you get to NYC, pick up a copy of the Village Voice, which will give you info of gigs as well

Can anyone point me in the right direction (done a search but cant find a post) or explain to me about the avenues?
I get the midtown, upper west areas etc its just when you have to explain it with the cross street??
I found an example on tripadvisor someone had used:
590 Fifth Avenue would mean that you need to say Fifth Avenue and 50th Street.
Why 50th street?
Sorry if its quite easy but am just finding trouble getting my head around it.New York ♥..........These street will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you.
No place in the world that can compare ♥ 2nd October 2010 ♥0 -
Nope you cant add another discount card on top of the one that macys/bloomies give you for being an out of towner, and also, and i know its pedantic, but the discount cards are 11% not 10%.
Be aware that the card will not be accepted in all sections of the shop, ie you cant purchase make up etc and get 11% and certain outlets dont accept it eitherm however they will tell you when you get your card who will and wont accept the discount. If an item is already discounted on the rack then you will still get a further 11% off the price too.
Personally I was never over impressed with bloomies and found their goods far more expensive than macys, and the their staff are snotty beyond belief, however I guess you have to go for their "little brown bags", well that was the excuse Mrs Phatbear used to drag me back the shop on the last occasion.]....
Just goes to show - we found bloomingdales much better than Macy's. Staff went out of their way to help, guy serving my OH her much coveted Ugg Boots (at a bargain price of $130 compared to £140 in the UK) knocked off the visitor discount even though we had not been to the visitor centre to sort it out. Daughter loved a particular pair of jeans which were too long and staff offered to get them altered free of charge and delivered to our hotel the next day. Certainly preferred it to Macy's (although daughter reckoned Macy's did the best waffles ever!).0 -

Ok... let me try to help here...
5th Avenue runs from the top tip of manhattan, right down nearly the whole of the island. It runs up and down the island basically.. 5th Avenue starts at about 143rd street right at the top of manhattan right down to 8th street. This is easily about 7 miles long.
Say you want to go somewhere, 611 5th Avenue, New York..
Now, as the street is so long, it is really difficult to gauge exactly where 611 5th Avenue is, and also the fact that no one speaks about numbers of properties on a street.
So, what people from NYC do, is use the streets going across, (streets go across, avenues go up and down), as a marker point.
So, back to my example.... 611 5th Avenue, is between 49th street, and 50th street, so depending i am, (south or north) depends how i'd tell a taxi driver to take me there... the easiest way, is just to pick a street, until you understand how NYC roads work!!!
so, my 611 5th avenue, which is difficult to find as no one knows numbers, now becomes, 5th avenue and 50th street (you'd tell a taxi driver, 5th avenue and 50th), which means it would drop me near enough right outside 611 5th avenue.. which happens to be... Saks 5th Avenue..
hope that helps!0 -
