cheaper than the UK most probably...
$3.569 is what i can find doing some googling... so about 55p a litre....
We hired a car with a full tank of petrol and wanted to leave it as empty as possible, but we weren't QUITE going to make it back to the airport, so we stopped to fill up. Large signs saying "It's an offence to fill your own petrol tank in NJ, please wait to be served."
That's when we realise we're not quite sure what sort of gas needs to go in this particular tank. But we leave that for the attendant to decide, and start working out how many gallons we need.
Attendant arrives, looking about 15 (I know, it's a sign of my age not theirs) and we say we're not sure what sort of gas we need, so he goes off to ask someone. When he comes back he tells us we need 'regular' gas, and we ask for however many gallons we've decided, but he says they don't do it like that, we have to tell him how much we want to spend. More frantic calculations in the back seat (fortunately the boys can do maths even if I can't), and we tell him how many $ we want to spend.
It's made more complicated by the boys realising that a US gallon isn't the same as a UK gallon.
What I found interesting in all this "you can't fill your own petrol tank" palaver is that they stick the nozzle into your tank, then wander off and start someone else's filling!
anyway, steelhorse, are you planning to drive right into NY city? Best of luck if you are ... :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Did I ever recount my experience of filling up with gas in New Jersey?

Well why didnt you just give him $10 or whatever and leave it at that, and unless it was Diesel it'll have been 87.
I have yet to come across a gas station in the US where you dont have to pay first.0 -
i once filled up my now ex's car in Maine...
go into place, pay how much you want to fill up, walk back to pump, stick nozzle in, click it on, and sit back down in the warm car...
watch the gauge slowly tick up to $30, and it really does slow down when it is getting close, and then get out of car, nozzle back in holster, and then back into car..
why can't we lock our nozzles so i can sit in my warm car while i'm filling up in awful weather!!!!0 -

I use the fuel cap to wedge under the pump handle when I'm filling up. The pump clicks off when the tank is full. Will not work for every car, but works for me.0 -
paddy... cheeky idea... i might try that.... i sometimes fill up my car two or three times a week, from empty to full, so anything not to just have to stand there...

Ooooo facinating non-new york fact coming up.
There has never been a single case of fire caused by a mobile phone at a petrol/gas station ever. However there was a spate, great word, of fires at petrol stations in the states because people used the nozzle handle lock thing then whilst they waited they sat in the car etc and therefore electro staticaly charged their clothes etc and when they went to remove the petrol nozzle a spark from contact with metal nozzle and mized with the petrol vapours caused ignition, and that's why ladies and gentlemen, and marky, why we dont have those pump lock things in the UK.
I know you're all amazed are'nt you!!!
all the best
