    princess fiona..

you can book a table, make some informed choices, take a peek at www.menupages.com to have a look at restaurant menu's and prices, and then book via www.opentable.com

very useful, means you don't have to call up asking for reservations, you just know if anything is already available..

Many thanks I'll get on to it.
Thanks to everyone for all the advice and info on here. Took me a while to get through all of the 66 pages but well worth it. Can wait till December.

  • hio i booked my flights from 11th to the 16th December this year for £295 off expedia, only problem is trying to find a hotel. Is it best to wait for a last minute deal or to book early. Im looking to spend about £130 a night, and we want to be close to central new york and not share a bathroom, is this possible. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Markymoo's listed a few hotels in his NY Guide.

The first post of the Cheap Hotels in New York thread has links to moneysavers' posts about various NY Hotels as well as tripadvisor.

  • I'm going to New York for five weeks soon, and I have some questions I hope someone can help me with smile.gif

Thinking of taking my laptop. If I get a standard UK to US adaptor, will that work? What about voltage? I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle of taking it, although I do think it would be useful (I'm going there to study).

I won't be taking shampoo/soap etc, to save on weight. Is there a local eqivalent to shops like Poundland/Bodycare, where I can stock up cheaply?

I'll be there from early September to late October. Is it likely to get cold? Should I pack a winter coat/warm jumpers?

What about money? I don't want to carry around huge amounts of cash, but I'm also wary of getting stung by fees every time I use a cashpoint. What's the best thing to do? I've just got a credit card with 10 months interest free on new purchases. Is it a good idea to use that? I'm a bit clueless..

hi... £130 a night, is $227 including taxes (and a low exchange of 1.75), so you really will be struggling.. especially as you won't share a bathroom..

cosmopolitan works out at £172 a night... hmm... have you tried the pod hotel.. that is supposed to be cheap too..

misscomickat...99.9% of laptop power supplies that i've seen will say something like 100v-250v... check on the label, and you should be fine! (all apple mac's work, all sony's, Hp's, Compaq's etc etc(

there are places called duane reade nearly on the corner of every street. you'll be able to buy your toiletries there...

as for the weather.. maybe.. i've done beginning of sept, and it was scorching hot.. i've done end of october, and it was still in the late teens early twenties.. the temperature can drop drastically at night though... check weather.com's archives for what the temperature has been like for when you're going.

nationwide/abbey zero/post office card. these don't charge for foriegn currency purchases

nationwide current account. get one of these, stash your money in it, use ATM's to get money out.. again, no charges whatsoever for doing so! (oh, and don't call it a cashpoint or a cash machine when you're out there... it is an ATM to NY'ers and would have no clue what you mean otherwise!!!!)

  • Arghhhh why do i always type it out and in trying to edit before final posting end up losing what i wrote.

    Here goes again,

We are travelling 30th dec - 5th Jan and whilst i usually stay in the Cosmo and can book it now i wondered if there are any places that allow you to book, pay deposit maybe or secure with your credit card without actually charging it and pay on arrival or departure?

The only reason i am asking is the season and dates we are travelling and because we are going to Florida for 3 weeks on the 17th Sept and i could do with NY being paid for on the return from that. Im dubious that the Cosmo will have availabilty and so am thinking of booking somewhere else possibly with view to paying later just so i know we have somewhere.

I have been several times but always stay in Cosmo because we love the area and the price is great. I am just unaware how to approach this with it being the busy time of the year. I would prefer not to be in Times Square area but if i can secure the room now without paying the balance i would do so. We are also travelling as two couples and are hoping to share a room with two double beds as a further cost saver, which is of course possible at our usual haunt. I am starting to think New Years was a bad idea, one week later and it would have been no problem for a room.

    Any advice appreciated.

Thanks...are those all credit cards? Do you think if I went and applied tomorrow I would have it in time for the 10th of September? I'm not sure if I would get a credit card as I'm not working at the moment and am not on any electoral roll.

Is it the Nationwide credit card thats ment to be the best?

    Markymoo-
    Hi,
Just wondering if you could advise me on transport to and from the hotel please. I have done a search and seen that in a previous post you recomment Tel-aviv and Carmel. I have been on both sites and seen that on the Tel-aviv if you are late they apply waiting rates.
I cant see anything about waiting rates on the Carmel site, is this the one that you mention about telephoning once you have landed to pick you up? As this would be more convient for us (dont want to get caught out if we are late)
    Many thanks

yes. they are credit cards.. 10 days.. doubtful...

tbh. i don't moneysave as much as i should when in NYC.. i take cash... no travellers cheques, just cash.. i just find i know everywhere will take cash...

    ----

as for the car services... neither of them will charge a waiting time, unless you book the meet in the airport terminal service.

you give them your flight details, but you when you arrive, clear immigration and customs, and get your luggage, then you call them, and they will pick you up kerbside... could be a 30 minute wait, which is why i don't bother now.. used them a couple of times, but i find a yellow cab to be more efficient!

  • Ah right i see, ok thanks for the information. I might just get a cab then if its no hassle.
