  • Hello all!

    Any recommendations for second hand record shops in NYC? I'm only there for three days and will be with my parents so I'd like to pick one or two really good ones (especially for indie/alternative stuff) rather than drag them around the list of 100 or so I found on the internet.

    (Link here, if anyone wanted a look: http://people.cs.uu.nl/jur/recordshops/nyc.html )

    Thanks in advance!

    you only get jetlagged on the way back, because you lose 5 hours...

    on the way out to NYC, you gain 5 hours, so stay up late, yes, you may be tired, and it is a long day, but i say, if you can brave it, and stay up til around midnight NYC time, and get 8 hours solid sleep, you'll have converted to the time, and have a great holiday. If you don't, you'll still be stuck on UK time, and wanting to go to sleep early.

    you will have paid for a hotel room, for 7 nights, and you'll end up with staying in it for 7 nights, but then losing half a day of shopping etc.. waste of money IMO...

    Yikes - I'm going to sound like Marky's yes-girl, but again brilliant advice. I go to NYC on average 2 x year, always get an AM flight from Edinburgh to either JFK or Newark (Newark is best price on Continental). Typically, we're to my sister in Brooklyn by 3 or 4 in the afternoon which is great - we can catch up, have a wee nap, go out for dinner and get to bed at decent-ish hour, adjusting very quickly to EST. (The we'en has a prob sleeping past 5 am for first 2 mornings of trip - ugh ugh ugh.)

    The total pain in the bahookie is the jet lag on the way back from USA to UK...

    Honestly, the flight tween UK and NYC is a doddle - try the long-haul to Oz if you want a real eye-opener!

    Cheers.

    Going to New York on the 29th December for 6 nights. Does anyone have any ideas which shopping outlets are the best? I went to Woodbury outlets 6 years ago on Black Friday :eek: and got some great bargains but wondered if Southsteet Seaport would be better? My 14 year old daughter is excited about hitting the shops. I take it there are buses that go to these outlets from Manhatten?

    Any advice would be welcome!

    Have a look at:

    Can't recommend any of these personally. I have much more fun in Soho, Tribeca, the Village and the other boroughs and don't do the malls / outlets....

    Hiya, robotgirl,

    I've not a clue personally, but this person seems really in the know:

    In general (not aimed at OP): NYC is composed of borough's, areas and all sorts of vastly differing neighbourhoods... similar to how London / Edinburgh / Dublin have different names for different parts of town....so if you mean you're going to be in Manhattan, you'll get better and fewer results on, say, Google, if you tailor your search to Manhattan....

    So, folks on MSE might find this handy:

    does that include flights.. i assume so.. take off £300 for flights, and you have a good healthy budget for a hotel. wow... £1000 for a hotel, 4 nights, is £250 a night, $500.. you could get a good deal on a W hotel, on 14th street, plush, posh and out of this world (and my price range!), just checked and they have rooms at USD 526.75 per night inc taxes... but is it nice - www.starwoodhotels.com and i recommend the W Union Square.

    i hope i worked out your budget right, and that you really meant that, if not, sorry.. :)

    Hi yes that was including flights thats brilliant thanks alot :D im dead excited ive never been! I want my fella to have something to look forward to as he's working nights at the moment

    thanks

    <repeat mode>

    cheap is £200 ish
    average is £225
    ok is £250
    expensive is over £275

    </repeat mode>

    things do get cheaper in Jan, for flights in march, i've said this before, and will keep saying it.. for flights, 3 months in advance is normally the best time to book, and you'll easily get a flight under £250

    M

    Cheers Markymoo, I've just read your guide and found out about the 3 month rule so I'll start looking again start of Jan! ;)

    Filmmad- We went to Woodbury Common this Easter and will definitely go back there next Easter. The choice of shops for all sorts of things is excellent, to us it was worth the bus fare, you get the bus from the Port Authority and they run there and back regularly. South Street seaport is much smaller. One of the best A&F stores there and Victorias Secret, a few more shops but nothing like Woodbury although the setting is nice there too.
    Regarding Markymoos 3 month flight rule, he may well be right but what you also need to coinsider is if you are not near a main airport and therefore need to connect. I am sure there will be good deals from Manchester, Heathrow etc, but to get a flight for £250.00 including a connection might not be possible. I booked my flights to NY for next April back in September because the deal available to me was good, so I booked it.
    BA will have their next sale on 26/27 December.
    The Cosmopolitan Hotel Markymoo mentions is also available via Expedia and Hotel.Com and via quidco you get 6.5% cash back.( I think that's the same for both companies), so this may work out better.

    the prices on hotels.com and expedia.co.uk are the standard rack rates of the hotels, so you're getting a 6.5% discount on that, but beware, on both of these sites, taxes are not included, so you get clobbered for that at the hotel..

    with hotelconxions, you don't get any quidco back, but at least you know that what you've paid is what you end up paying...
