    Thanks for your help Markymoo.

I have been on both websites and their prices look very good, however neither have an accessible vehicle in their fleet. But as my sister and I can walk a few paces, we will probably hire a minivan from Carmel as it will hold the four of us, plus our luggage and two fold-up wheelchairs.

Just a quick question, are they a very reliable company? We do have the option of booking a large vehicle through Silverjet, but they quoted us $152 each way, including gratuity, but I suppose the plus point of that is if there were any probs, we could just go to a Silverjet rep at the airport.

    Thanks
  • Hey, a bit aside from flights, sorry...

If I take my hair straightners/phone charger etc to New York with me do I need a voltage converter or just an adapter? Im quite worried, as the last thing I want to do is blow up my GHDs!
    Thanks

    Hope someone can help.

I am planning to go to new york with my girlfriend in october 2008, all being well I am going to pop the question (at a venue to be decided) and I have a budget of 2k for the flights and accomodation.

We need to go october half term week as she is a trainee teacher so we I was planning to go on Friday 24th October and return Wednesday 29th October.

We could be a little flexible with the dates as long as it is in this week but we really would like to be there for the weekend hence going on the Friday.

I have looked at expedia, delta, ba and continental and the cheapest direct flights from Manchester I can find are £405 which seems expensive and cuts into the budget for the hotel a little more than I would like!

Does anyone know if the flights will come down in price or are we better off getting them now as the price may increase?

    Thanks in advance.

Ive found the hotel and 2 sites offering rooms with different prices, overall lastminute is £1042 but PerfectEscapes is $1854 (£893)

Apart from the commission on the credit card are there any other drawbacks of paying for the hotel in US Dollars?

carmel are reliable, they've never let me down... though a minivan isn't that big, so be careful with that one...

well.. your GHD's won't really work.. we work on 240v in the UK, they work on 110v out in the USA... so, they won't get as hot..

the best thing to do, is buy cheap straighteners when you're out there from something like duane reade, (a pharmacy) as you'll get something that will work perfectly...

double check that the US site includes tax, etc... most don't... so it will be charged at the hotel...

get a nationwide credit card / debit card, or a post office credit card, and then you don't have the commission charges..

flight prices now, are just the standard, a bit nearer to the time, say between 6mths - 3mths before, airlines will put offers on, so you can get a better price... if you're flying from a major airport (london, manchester) you should be able to get flights for under £300, and nearer £250 if you keep checking...

i booked in July for a September holiday this year, and normally Jan for when i fly in March... gives you a bit of an idea..

OK, i'm savvy with flights, and planning a trip early 2008. And noticed your signature.

But Markymark, noticed that BA airport tax is £182.00 for Heathrow - JFK.

Just wondering if anyone has actually managed to get a sub-£200 (or even £250) flight in 2007? Is it possible anymore?

I am planning a long weekend in NY in early March and I read with interest your comments about booking flights in January for a March trip. When I first start looking in September, direct flights from London were around £230. Now that I have definitely decided to go, and have booked the time off work and the Hotel, I am dismayed to see that the fight prices have increased to £320+ and are going up by the day, for the dates I want (and any other Friday/Monday flights in March).

I think these increases are due to the popularity of NY at this time due to the excellent exchange rate, hotel prices seem to be increasing as well. Do you still think we will see flight prices return to the Sub £250 mark in January? I can't decide whether to take the plunge now or wait a month but maybe end up paying more.
