    Hi Guys

At the end of October i'm going to New York for 7 nights, i'll be there over Halloween and the New York Marathon. I've told been by a few people to do my research before I go so i get the most out of the experience.

Apart from the obvious things (ie Empire State Building), what do you consider unmissable and things that I have to do whilst i'm there to get the most out of my week?

Also for 7 nights, i'm budgetting about £1000, do you think thats enough to take or perhaps too much?

    Thanks

Hi tony - I've merged your thread with the 'Anything & Everything NY' thread :)

First, read Mr Moo's Guide to Sightseeing in Manhattan

Then for further info on each attraction, simply type it (e.g. statue of liberty into the "Search this Thread" box near the top of the page to find previous posts.

IMO empire state isn't a must see... from the outside it is.. seeing it in the skyline.. but going up to the top isn't it is all cracked up to me.. small, pokey, and a relativley dull skyline photo..

now... Top of the Rock at the Rockerfeller Centre.. MUCH better..spacious, not rushed, and a better view, from one side, central park, the other side, midtown & downtown.. including.. yeah.. the Empire State Building.. which makes photos look 10 times better...

  • In Berlin I went on a fantastic tour called Alternative Berlin. It was pay what you thought it was worth, and we were taken to out of the way non touristy places, like a big flea market, an abandoned prison, skate park, graffiti walls. Is there anything similar in New York?

Are you after that sort of alternative scene? If so I can give you tons of places to go

Get dressed up and get in the parade :Dhttp://www.halloween-nyc.com/index.php You will have an absolute ball and meet people from all walks of life and all over the world. It does get very busy though so be prepared to wear comfy shoes as its a pretty long walk if you do the whole route. My OH ended up on local TV dressed as Beetlejuice. Everyone takes it really seriously, all the shop workers are dressed up, the firehouses are decorated and everone involved has a great time

If you're talking about a grand for food and drink then its really up to you you can spend as much or as little on dinner etc, consider on our last trip myself and mrs phatbear had a amazing main course and dessert each and a couple of drinks for $100 with a tip and that was as at a good restaurant, its like london you could spend £50 on dinner or £500.

I think I took about £700 for a 5 day trip, but spent a lot of that on clothes etc and we still ate well and took a few cabs etc etc and i still came home with money, mind you we have'nt got a problem with diving into a deli for a sandwhich at lunchtime.

Excursion etc will eat money so if you're happy with moving about by subway/bus and cab you save a lot of money, one top tip is to buy a weeks metro card which will give you unlimited access to the subway system, and as i found out on my last trip, the bus system too.

    all the best

My good lady loves steak and her top 3 for new york are:

    1. blue smoke bbq
    2. juniors
    3. virgils

all reasonably priced in each instance a starter or dessert and main with a drink or two for the pair of us was usually around the $100 mark.

    all the best
