So did you have a good time then, Savvy?
God, I miss being there!!!Aaah yes.. Auto Lock.. .my car here in the UK does that.. (manual as well), but there is an option to turn it off... so i have.. i don't like it locking the door.. i dunno why....
Oh yes, and none of us liked the fact that when I clicked the fob to open the doors, it only opened MY door. I had to click again to let them in.
I thought there might be an option to turn it off, but didn't like to nobble the hire car. I DID turn off cruise control because I wasn't sure I'd got the hang of it anyway.glad you had fun though!
And I'm still waiting for the jet lag to kick in. I slept a bit on the plane back, then had a couple of hours later that morning, then just went to bed at normal time. Today I've driven best part of 150 miles home, been shopping, and plan to go to bed at normal time (not before midnight).
Everyone else slept longer than me yesterday, plus at least two of them slept on the journey home, and they're still a bit 'fragile'.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I don't like it locking the door because I'd like to be able to get out in a hurry if I needed to! :rotfl: I lock myself in SOMETIMES when driving near where I work, but I CHOOSE to do that.
Oh yes, and none of us liked the fact that when I clicked the fob to open the doors, it only opened MY door. I had to click again to let them in.
I feel exactly the same as yourself there on the first point, and i just don't like it.... but, the click, and another click, is a feature i've always liked, as i drive alone a lot of the time, so for me, that is good security, that no one can open the boot, or passenger door, and try steal things. the only door that is unlocked is mine, and it is a little bit of security..
and NYC in the heat... yeah..been there done that, spent $50 on water in a week.. *L*0 -
After months planning via this site and various other places i had to give my story so to speak.
Back last wed after a mad week, here goes.
The place is awesome and it is big,god i looked up to the sky so much i have a cricked neck.
Firstly the hotel,in Chelsea it was ideal ,brekkie included and handy saved a bomb and got eh kids fed ready for the day, this kept us going till lunch, plenty of places then for a quick snack,i particularly liked Grand Centrak station on the bottom floor, loads of eating places to cater for all tastes.
Money was a cinch with the Nationwide card, paid for goods with the card, swipe and sign no fees to pay ideal, took enough cash to start us off and then got more from the ATM ads we wanted,a lot safer and convenient in my eyes.
Highlights
Wall st and then Ground Zero ,visited the little chapel nearby, this was so sad, never felt such emotion walking around a chapel,it just engulfed you and brought tears to the eyes.
Central Park.so good, relaxing,so many joggers lol and other people doing things, stunning views and ideal place for some good pictures.
We also did the horse and carriage for the 4 of us which was £20,not essential but i guess its something we wanted to do.
Shopping was out of this world, the t-shirts and range of clothes etc was superb and so cheap,Macys wow, best meal of the week in the bar and grill there,£8 each for my OH and me,a piece of sirloin steak which melted in the mouth, superb!!!
Magnolia bakery ,had a job to find it ,but so small but the cup cakes at £1.25 a shot where heavenly and so yummy, wanted to bring a box back home,go there its a must.
Saw mary Poppins ticket via Box office of the theatre, whether any where half price i never enquired elsewhere, the show was ace.
Times Sq is like nowhere else i have seen anywhere else a street quite manic and not somewhere i would go to every night but a must see however.
Madame tussaud we went to which was excellent and kids loved the dummies there which of course had the US slant of people on show.
Top of the Rock and ESB
I have to be honest i preferred the Rock, views where better and got some great pics,.it was so crowded on the ESB that taking photos through the railings was blooming hopeless however found the Rock to a lot more suer friendly in all aspects, the queue to ESB was an hour whilst the rock was a quick walk in.However i guess you have to do the ESB if you visit NY don't you.
Now what else well The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island was such a good day, went early 9.30 am and bought tickets there, queued about 30 mins in all which to be honest i thought was good, got some great shots of the Statue then skipped getting off onto the island and went straight to Ellis Island, bought the audio tour which really enhanced the tour,i would suggest this is taken as the trip without headphones isnt quite the same IMHO.
Quite sad to hear the stories and the voices giving their story, caught the ferry back and then went onto the Helicopter ride, this was awesome,@70 but well worth it,the guy who took my cash was the most unfriendly person on the whole trip,i nearly told him i didnt fancy it. The views astounding and again some good pics to bring home.
I have to say the Americans where so friendly and helpful it was a pleasure to visit their country.
My other highlight was to meet Justin Lee Collins in the Apple Store,he posed for a picture and was a true gent!!!
Yellow cab from JFK came in at 67 $ with tips ,towncar going back 69$,this was ordered by our concierge ,i guess we could have got it cheaper but hey it wouldnt have made a great difference.
By the way we used the subway for the week for 4 of us coming in at £50,really handy and less hassle
And there it is our trip of a lifetime,i think i have covered everything lol
walked miles and miles and now a week required to recover lol
i wish its back to work tomorrow........
i hope people who are due to go out to NY find this post of some use
thank you to all the posters who assisted me in the past few months

Hampton Inn Manhattan Chelsea Hotel,
yes it was good and the hotel was really good in all aspects,if you take your laptop you can access the internet from your room otherwise in the lobby which was useful for info on the city.

NYC: Here we come!
We're flying off tomorrow morning, as usual I haven't got anything packed yet but it's half the fun of the holiday!
Just wanted to say thank you to everyone's advice on this thread, it's been very useful over the last couple of months and with lots of MS advice we should have a few cents left over for more shopping ;o)Lightbulb moment Jan 7th 2010 - all debts cleared by Dec 2010

I have a question about weather. I'm going to be in NYC from the start of September till the end of October. What sort of clothes should I take? Is it likely to get quite cold in that time? I'd rather pack the things I need, instead of shopping out there. Thanks.0
